Job Summary

The Jack D. Gordon Institute is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Research Scientist with expertise in political science, advanced statistical analysis, and survey development, including sample design, questionnaire development, and data analysis. The Sr. Research Scientist plays a leadership role in basic and applied research activities in topics including security, political science, and policy analysis. The Sr. Research Scientist May serve as Principal Investigator or co-Principal Investigator or work under the direction of a principal investigator or program director and with minimal supervision.

  • Designs and implements surveys, including developing sampling strategies and creating questionnaires.
  • Ensures the collection of high-quality data through careful planning and execution of survey methodologies.
  • Analyzes complex datasets using advanced statistical techniques.
  • Utilizes statistical software (SPSS, Stata, R) for data cleaning, analysis, and visualization.
  • Interprets and presents findings clearly and concisely, both in written reports and oral presentations.
  • Conducts original research on topics related to security, political science, and policy analysis.
  • Publishes findings in academic journals and presents research findings at the national and/or international level.
  • Stays current with developments in the field and applies new methodologies and theoretical approaches to ongoing research.
  • Works closely with other researchers, stakeholders, and partners to support collaborative projects.
  • Develops relationships to assist with the department's business development initiatives.
  • Communicates research findings to diverse audiences, including academic, policy, and public stakeholders.
  • Provides mentorship and guidance to junior researchers and interns.
  • Researches, engages with Spanish-speaking communities, and analyze relevant materials.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency in conducting research in diverse settings.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable and relevant regulatory guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree and five (5) years of relevant experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proficiency communicating (verbally/written) in Spanish.
  • Area studies expertise in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Research background in security-related areas.
  • Experience in survey development, including sample design, questionnaire creation, and data analysis (SPSS, Stata, and R).
  • Familiarity with qualitative research methods is a plus.
