Position Summary

The Campus Safety Dispatcher processes calls regarding emergency and non-emergency situations in a 24/7/365 operation. This position handles calls for service (via radio, telephone and other electronic means) from throughout NYU's global enterprise, ensuring an appropriate response is dispatched in accordance with University policy and procedures. The successful candidate is an expert multi-tasker who can remain calm in high stress situations and provide excellent customer service. The Campus Safety Dispatcher is also comfortable utilizing complex computerized systems and interacting with all members of the University community (students, parents, visitors, faculty, and staff). Responsible for maintaining the status of Department of Campus Safety (DCS) personnel on shift or special assignment within the Computer Aided Dispatch, (CAD), system.


Qualifications

Required Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred Education:
Bachelor's degree in security or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience:
Previous customer service experience

Preferred Experience:
3 years customer service experience or 3 years' experience in a public safety environment (i.e. police, fire, EMS, security, dispatch).

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to understand and work within emergency communications systems including multiple two-way radio systems, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, alarm receiver, video monitoring systems, access control systems, emergency mass notification systems, and telecommunications systems required. Demonstrated willingness to make split-second decisions in accordance with University policy and procedures required. Demonstrated sensitivity to the team atmosphere and commitment to addressing problems which could impair the atmosphere of the Communications Center required. Knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Windows required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Excellent typing skills required. Ability to learn the practices and procedures involved in public safety communications and operate radio/telephone receiving and transmitting equipment required. Ability to learn the geography of the University, the jurisdictional boundaries of the area served, and the location of streets and important buildings required. Ability to work under stress and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations, adjusting quickly to changing situations required. Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate in English required. Strong ability to multi-task required. Ability to read and interpret maps required. Ability to reach for telephones and radio access required. Ability to sit for long periods of time required. Ability to speak concisely required. Ability to hear accurately, especially when listening to radios and telephones required. Ability to work weekends and different shifts on a rotating basis required. Flexibility to work on any assigned shift required.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Association of Public Safety Communication Officials (APCO) Public Safety Telecommunicator certification preferred. Ability to accurately type 40 words per minute or more preferred. Ability to operate telephones, radios and a multiple screen computer console linked to a computer-aided dispatch communications system preferred.


Additional Information

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate salary range for this position is USD $22.155 to USD $32.155. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
