Organizational Unit Overview |
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed. |
Job Duties |
The Chair of the Department of Foundational Sciences of the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine (SoDM) must be eligible to hold the rank of Clinical Associate Professor or Associate PRofessor or higher. This position is responsible for mentoring the SoDM's foundational sciences faculty and providing leadership for the department's activities. Foundational Sciences is the home department for faculty in the areas of biological basic sciences and public health services, behavioral sciences and works in close collaboration with the Departments of Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and General Dentistry. In addition, this office works with the Offices of Dental Education and Informatics, Educational Support and Faculty Development, Research, Faculty Affairs, and the residency directors of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (
AEGD), General Practice Residency (
GPR) and Pediatric Dentistry.
Specific duties include:
* Mentoring and providing an academic home for Foundational Sciences faculty, comprised of Public Health, Basic Sciences, Epidemiology, Behavioral and Health Services faculty.
* Providing administrative support and leadership for the department by communicating priorities, standards, and procedures effectively; articulate a vision for the department; promote shared governance and academic freedom within the department and school.
* Providing oversight of the department operation and budget; work with faculty, staff, and others in identifying appropriate short-term and long-term goals, in setting priorities, and in focusing resources across the department.
- Participating in the teaching and research mission of the Department of Foundational Sciences for approximately 50% of time.
* Providing oversight, support, recruitment, development and retention of a competent and representative faculty and staff.
* Providing and promoting excellence in teaching, research, and service within the department and school.
* Providing support in evaluating and recommending faculty members for promotion/tenure and advancement in rank according to the university policies.
* Participating in program development, reviewing processes, curricular changes, accreditation activities and self-studies.
* Providing recommendation for teaching assignments within the department.
* Conducting annual performance review of faculty & staff and merit recommendations to the Dean.
* Managing the Department budget.
* Successful track record of funding (e.g.,
NIH,
NSF,
HRSA, etc.)
* Participating in programs and activities for the American Dental Education Association (
ADEA), American Association for Dental Oral and Craniofacial Research (
AADOCR), International Association for Dental Research (
IADR), and American Dental Association (
ADA) to commensurate the role at the school.
* Representing the department at internal and external academic communities, alumni, business and industry, government, foundations, patient and practitioner groups, and the general community.
* An
understanding and commitment to the primary care mission of the School.
* The ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, leaders and staff at all levels, and the ability to work independently.
* Performing other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the
UNC Optional Retirement Program (

Minimum Education/Experience |
Required Minimum Qualifications:
* Minimum educational requirements include a professional doctoral degree, such as a
DDS/
DMD/MD (or the equivalent) and/or a PhD in the biomedical/health sciences or public health field.
* Must be eligible to hold an appointment with the rank/title of an clinical associate professor, associate professor, clinical professor or professor within the academic unit code.
*
A teaching and research background in the areas of basic biological sciences, public health, epidemiology, behavioral or health services, as well as experience in working with foundational sciences faculty.

* Prefer five years of experience in progressively responsible administrative and leadership positions related to teaching and research. |
