Organizational Unit Overview |
The Department of Surgery is a multi-faceted organization in a complex organizational structure. It is a department within the School of Medicine with the attendant responsibility for patient care, medical education and research. The Chair of the department is also the Chief of Surgical services for the hospital and, as such, has a broad range of activities including administration of the OR; allocation of scarce OR resources; adequacy of surgical beds; and credentialing of hospital surgical staff.
The department includes full-time faculty members in the sections of: general & bariatric surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, transplant surgery, trauma & acute care surgery. The department faculty provide surgical care to the people of eastern North Carolina, including pre-operative and post-operative care. The department provides surgical education to medical students and residents every day of the year. The department also has a vibrant research program including funded grants and clinical trials. The employees in the department support the clinical, education and research work of the department. To accomplish these tasks requires a highly competent, appropriately classified, and an adequately paid staff. |
Job Duties |
The Department of Surgery at
ECU Health-Academic Practice is seeking a dynamic, academically oriented general surgeon with minimally invasive surgery skills to serve as Chief of the Division of General and Specialty surgery at
ECU Health Medical Center and the
ECU Brody School of Medicine.
The successful candidate will lead an active, collaborative clinical, teaching and research program consisting of four bariatric/general surgeons, one general surgeon and one bariatric fellow. Individuals with
MIS training and focus in a subspecialty area such as bariatric surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction/complex hernia, endocrine surgery, GI surgery including endoluminal therapy, foregut surgery, or other focus area are encouraged to apply.
The division provides general and bariatric surgical care in an expansive geographic region consisting of 29 counties serving a population of over 1.5 million people. The metabolic surgery team has been an international leader in both clinical and basic research with continuous funding for over three decades.
Additional leadership opportunities exist for qualified individuals within the department, hospital and service line.
Fixed Term or Tenure Track position available at the title/rank of Clinical Associate Professor/Associate Professor or Clinical Professor/Professor.
Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the
UNC Optional Retirement Program (

Minimum Education/Experience |
MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution and conferred by the time of hire, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for
ECFMG Certification.
Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of North Carolina.
Board certified in General Surgery. |

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
An established record of academic productivity, a national presence, leadership experience in a matrixed health care environment, and a broad knowledge in all aspects of complex general surgery. |
