Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) will contribute, as part of the structural biology team, in studies to better characterize tau and synuclein prions that accumulate in several neurodegenerative diseases and to examine the toxic effects they exert. This work will aid in the team's efforts to discover and develop treatments and cures for a number of neurodegenerative diseases.

The employee is responsible for the purification and characterization of protein aggregates from human and rodent tissues, as well as cellular samples. This will entail differential centrifugation to fractionate samples, infectivity assays in mammalian cells, assays to quantify aggregtes, such as HTRF, Western blots, and Elisa's, and also performing histological methods to visualize proteins, such as immunocytochemistry. The structural biology team is a key part of the overall multidisciplinary Drug Discovery research effort whose research interests span many fields of scientific research and report to the Team Leader. The goal of the team is to identify effective therapeutics against neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and multiple system atrophy.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at UCSF is pursuing a cutting-edge blend of basic science and clinical medicine to provide outstanding care to those suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. Founded in 1999, the IND is committed to creating therapeutics that will halt diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and dementia resulting from traumatic brain injuries. The IND is poised to make serious contributions to this struggle at the frontier of neuroscience and medicine. The mission of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases is to discover causes and develop cures for these illnesses with an innovative program of basic research and clinical medicine. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Stanley B. Prusiner, MD.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • At least one year of laboratory work in a research setting
  • BSL 2/3 approved (Bio Secure Lab)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational and record keeping skills
  • Ability to work as an effective and efficient team member, and to participate in team meetings and planning
  • Enthusiasm, positive outlook, collegiality and scientific curiosity
