Serves as a Medical Interpreter while providing language assistance services for the Limited English Proficient (LEP) individual in order to facilitate accurate, effective and efficient communication during the assessment and delivery of healthcare services. The Medical Interpreter will also serve the organization by promoting awareness about the language and cultural needs of the LEP individual. Works flexible hours to meet system needs. Performs other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Precisely and accurately interprets the exchange of information, including critical medical information, from English to the target language.
- Provides medical interpretation in an ethical and professional manner in compliance with Mercyhealth's code of conduct and Mercyhealth's Interpreter Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
- Develops, implements, coordinates and evaluates Mercyhealth processes and systems, in relation to communication opportunities and barriers for the LEP population.
- Computer Skills- knowledge and navigation of the computer and laptop systems used including the EMR software, Email software, Internet, and Social Media.
- Interprets accurately, efficiently and effectively using various methods of interpreting i.e. Video Remote Interpreting- VRI, Over the Phone Interpreting- OPI and In Person Interpreting
- Assists in translating text from English to the target language; may translate patient education information as specifically requested.
- Provides vital document and marketing materials translation and maintains records of documents translated.
- Knowledge of and supports system and regulatory policies (TJC, Civil Rights), procedures, and programs particular to interpretive services and Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals.
- Serves as a resource for Mercyhealth related to the services the department offers.
- Serves as a resource to address and resolve any interpreter services issues.
- Provides in-service education about interpreter services to other Mercyhealth providers.
- Supports cultural competence and special needs including LEP.
- Completes ongoing independent education of medical terminology, conditions, diagnosis, treatments, procedures, tests, etc. in English and the target language
- Supports budget effectiveness for LEP services.
- Serves as a Liaison to community agencies and businesses for interpretive services.

Special Physical Demands While performing the duties of this Job, the partner is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The partner is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel. The partner is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
