Job Description

Primary Purpose

Supervises the operation of production activities in a profitable and efficient manner through proper utilization of assigned manpower, materials, equipment, and space. Is responsible for coordinating all activities within his/her scope of control and for setting priorities necessary to accomplish predetermined goals, including customer requirements. Supervises shift maintenance personnel in the absence of the Site Manager.

Specific Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Directs the manufacturing and material handling activities on a given shift. Trains and supervises hourly employees in these activities; administers plant rules and procedures; recommends employees and candidates for hire, promotion, demotion, transfer, disciplinary action and/or termination.
  • Effectively manages the work schedule within the department to prevent idle time, and provide for the optimal use of manpower, machinery and material. This includes the proper use of any established work standards and/or incentive plans. Responsible for scheduling and controlling overtime.
  • Maintains standards of quality to meet customer and internal specifications. Strives for continuous improvement in quality performance through proper training, good communication, effective leadership/supervision, and follow-up with all members of the shift.
  • Has authority to stop machines/production to communicate machine problems and breakdowns to Maintenance Manager.
  • Inspects product for quality defects. Has authority to stop production due to product safety and quality issues, place product on hold, and communicate non-conformances to Site Manager and/or QA Manager.
  • Maintains safe working conditions throughout the plant by coaching, training and taking corrective action on unsafe conditions or acts. Serves as a member of the Plant Safety Committee. Implements all approved safety recommendations, and insures compliance with established safety standards, including lockout/tagout, hearing conversation and other programs required by law or management.
  • Effectively handles employee complaints, suggestions, questions, and conflicts in accordance with the guidelines established in the Employee Handbook, and in accordance with Company policy/procedure. Maintains employee morale and discipline through fairness and impartiality.
  • Responsible for reporting production information at the end of the shift.
  • Assists in the review of labor and manufacturing costs as they relate to production. Analyzes, pursues and recommends methods for reducing these costs.
  • Coordinates the implementation of any approved material or method changes. Responsible for communicating these changes to production personnel and follows-up to insure understanding and proper implementation.
  • Keeps current on technical developments and changes in order to appraise or make recommendations to management and supervisors and to instruct and train employees.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Site Manager.

Level of Authority

The Production Lead has the authority to shut down production equipment for safety reasons and./or to prevent the production of defective product and place product on hold if it does not meet customer/company specifications.

Reporting Relationship

This position reports to the Site Manager.

Job Specifications and Requirements

Education and Experience

Requires high school diploma or equivalent. Some post-secondary education preferred (i.e., Technical or Vocational education; Business, Management or Manufacturing).

Minimum requirement of three years experience in blow molding, with the technical and managerial expertise required to successfully accomplish the job.

Other Requirements:

Ability to communicate quickly and effectively with all members of the shift, as well as with Management.

Capable of managing and training all members of the shift on an on-going basis.

A strong mathematical ability is essential.

Ability to visually and mentally make priority decisions and independent judgment calls based on the situation at hand.

Ability to efficiently and effectively use a computer and related software.

Ability to work all shifts and required overtime.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift/push/pull 70 pounds on a continual basis:this is a heavy physical demand job as outlined by the U.S. Department of Labor.Incumbent is required to stand/walk for up to 11 hours per shift on a concrete floor and is frequently required to do the following:

  • Lift up to 120 lbs.
  • Carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Push/pull up to 900 lbs. using a hydraulic hand jack (this is the equivalent of a static push/pull of approximately 70 lbs.)
  • Must frequently squat/bend/kneel/reach/ etc. in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
