Description

We are seeking a driven and talented 2025 Manufacturing Engineering Intern - Wood Plant to join our team at Steelcase. In this role, you will contribute to the new product launches, influence product design, and support product development initiatives at our Kentwood wood facility. This internship offers a hands-on experience in a dynamic environment where you'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful introduction of new products.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Assist in the development and optimization of manufacturing processes for new Steelcase products.
  • Collaborate with product design teams to provide input on design for manufacturability and assembly.
  • Participate in process validation, testing, and quality assurance activities to ensure products meet Steelcase's high standards.
  • Analyze and improve existing manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and maintain product quality.
  • Implement LEAN principles and processes into the manufacturing process development.
  • Complete PPAP packages to validate manufacturing processes including capability analysis, part layout verification, etc.
  • Participating in PFMEA and DFMEA activities.
  • Participating in Design for Manufacturability.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for innovation.
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes, product development.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and tools is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate across different disciplines.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous internship or co-op experience in manufacturing, engineering, or packaging is a plus but not required.
  • Understanding of LEAN principles
  • Previous SAP knowledge preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Preferred Education: Sophomore or Junior pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

  • Reliable transportation, many of our sites do not have public transportation available.
  • Lean Manufacturing Principles: Proficiency in applying lean methodologies to streamline processes, reduce waste, and improve efficiency.
  • CAD Software Proficiency: Strong skills in using CAD tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar for designing and analyzing manufacturing processes.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Problem-Solving: Exceptional analytical skills for identifying issues and developing effective solutions in a manufacturing environment.
  • Technical Communication: Clear and concise communication of complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
