The Brody School of Medicine (
BSOM) at East Carolina University is the fourth oldest medical school in North Carolina; it was chartered to increase the supply of primary care physicians serving the state, to improve the health and well-being of the region, and to train physicians who will meet the health care needs of the state.
Under the leadership of the Dean and Executive Dean, the
BSOM grants both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees plus Master's degrees in Public Health and Biomedical Sciences with a student body of ~ 470 students and 450 faculty members and research scientists.
The Department of Family Medicine at
ECU, Brody School of Medicine, is a nationally recognized leader in Family Medicine education. The Family Medicine Department, located in a 120,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility, provides a wide variety of comprehensive primary care services for all age groups to include: procedural skills, obstetrical care, nutrition services, counseling and psychological support in an integrated care model. |
Job Duties |
The Brody School of Medicine (
BSOM) is committed to the goals of its mission: to increase the supply of primary care physicians serving the state, to improve the health and well-being of the region, and to train physicians who will meet the health care needs of the state. The key to achieving this mission is to assure that students receive a significant portion of their clinical education in the community practices throughout our region. This dedicated network of community physicians provides an invaluable real-world, practical experience that helps set our medical students apart when they begin their residency training.
As temporary, clinical faculty members with the
BSOM Department of Family Medicine, preceptors are community physicians who have met the established criteria and have agreed to provide a four-week educational experience for 1-12 medical students fulfilling their family medicine clerkship each academic year (April - March). Students will assist in patient care in both the ambulatory and hospital setting under the direct supervision of the preceptor, participating as fully as possible in their preceptor's daily activities.
In this role, the Community Clinical Preceptor will be responsible for:
1. Understanding the goals and objectives of the family medicine clerkship and its list of the required clinical activities that all medical students must complete during their clerkship as well as any periodic updates to these documents.
2. Participating in periodic site visits with
BSOM Family Medicine Clerkship Leadership.
3. Supervising third-year medical students as they engage patients in their clinical practice environment by:
* Obtaining appropriate histories and physical exams based on each the chief complaint of each patient that they assess.
* Formulating their own differential diagnosis, assessment, and initial diagnostic and therapeutic plan for each patient that they assess.
* Receiving each student's verbal presentations of their patient encounters
* Reviewing any written or electronic documentation provided including: patient encounters, prescriptions, and patient care orders.
* Providing patient care education and anticipatory guidance as appropriate.
4. Providing timely verbal feedback regarding
patient care skills, communication, medical knowledge base, systems-based practice, practice-based learning, overall performance, and professionalism.
5. Utilizing the BSOM's current electronic learning management system to provide a timely evaluation of each student's patient care skills, communication, medical knowledge base, systems-based practice, practice-based learning, overall performance, and professionalism during their preceptorship.
