Position Highlights

The University of Arizona, Counseling & Psych Services is seeking a full-time, independently licensed mental health clinician (LPC, LMFT, LCSW, PhD, PsyD) to serve students within the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). A successful applicant will provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and psychotherapy for students in the veterinary medicine professional program. The person in this role may also assist with mental wellness programming and outreach in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide in-person and telehealth counseling services using culturally informed and culturally relevant practices to veterinary medical students, including assessment, diagnosis, and psychotherapy treatment.

Respond to student crisis situations and provide suicide assessment as needed.

Establish rapport quickly and communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty.

Develop appropriate individual treatment plans for clients.

Design and conduct psychoeducational workshops on mental wellness topics for veterinary medical students and the College of Veterinary Medicine community.

Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team with The University of Arizona's Counseling & Psych Services and Campus Health Center.

Provide consultation to CVM staff, families, UA faculty, staff, administrators, and CHS medical providers.

Partner and collaborate with other University departments, wellness programs and community entities to provide quality support.

Maintain appropriate documentation in an electronic record system consistent with ethical guidelines, state statutes, and internal policies.

Use information technology to support and improve integrated wellness care.

Attend and participate in regular CAPS staff meetings, case conferences, and in-service/professional development training.

Attend CVM meetings as needed.

Participate in relevant CHS/CAPS and University committees, as assigned.

Provide all services in a manner which is professional, culturally sensitive, and respectful of differences.

Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

Excellent at assisting students with identifying their needs, setting goals, crisis management, and providing referrals as needed.

Systems-informed consultative skills.

Must be able to collaborate effectively with others.

Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

Self-awareness of how one's own identities and life experiences impact their counseling strategies and interactions with students.

Proficiency in addressing intersectional issues of culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, and other aspects of identity within the context of psychotherapy with emerging adults.

Knowledge and sensitivity to racial trauma and a commitment to anti-racism.

A commitment to continued learning in the areas of cultural humility, equity, and inclusion.

An innovative approach to addressing college mental health needs.

Ability to effectively work with a diverse population on a broad range of clinical needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher from an accredited institution in Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Counseling or other counseling-related field, in compliance with the State of Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners.
  • Licensed (LPC, LMFT, LCSW, PhD, PsyD) and in good standing. If not currently licensed in Arizona, ability to become licensed in Arizona within 6 months of employment.
  • Five years of related work experience, including two years of experience providing counseling services (practicum/internship experiences included).
Preferred Qualifications

  • Independently Licensed (LPC, LMFT, LCSW, PhD, PsyD) in the State of Arizona, in good standing.
  • Prior clinical experience in a multidisciplinary clinic setting.
  • English/Spanish bilingual.
  • Work experience providing psychotherapy to health professional students and/or medical trainees.
  • Training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and related modalities.
  • Experience in clinical work with trauma, anxiety, depression, risk/crisis assessment and management.
  • Experience with a variety of technological tools including Zoom, MS Teams, email, spreadsheets, online scheduling, and a variety of mental health apps and online tools.
  • Experience with providing psychoeducational training and presentations.
