The programmer analyst position will support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB). The successful candidate will provide scientific satellite remote sensing analysis. They will perform analysis of environmental events detected from satellite imagery and sensor data from a wide range of NOAA and Non-NOAA (Department of Defense, NASA, and Foreign) satellites.

Analysts will work with data imagery and plots to monitor, track, and provide forecast input for events such as fires, volcanoes, oil spills, and other events for NOAA, other Government users, and the public. The work involves a thorough understanding of satellite imagery and the science that it represents. There is a large emphasis on Python Programming and ArcGIS with a focus on spatial analysis, spatial databases, ArcGIS Enterprise and AGOL, Python scripting, and Deep Learning.

SAB operations run 24x7 and all analysts share in supporting all shifts, including overnight.

Responsibilities:



  • Provide analysis of satellite imagery, integrated with ancillary datasets, to create briefings and products that enable its users to mitigate disasters and environmental hazards
  • Examine & analyze satellite imagery
  • Onsite training and certification by current staff


Required Experience:



  • Experience in physical meteorology, remote sensing, oceanography, computer programming, and basic Linux fundamentals.


Education:



  • M.S. or equivalent experience in meteorology, oceanography, remote sensing science, GIS, or similar areas.


Skills:



  • Highly detail-oriented, organized, and timely
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team setting
  • Aptitude and desire to do daily analysis for tracking events
  • Work within the team framework created by management and work with team members on assigned projects


Other Requirements:



  • Citizenship: US Citizen or Green Card holder
  • Clearance: Must be able to pass a background check for a public trust.
