Description

Description: Under the direct and immediate supervision of a surgeon, provides aid in exposure, hemostasis and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. Makes patients and their needs a primary focus of one's actions; develops and sustains productive patient relationships. Actively seeks information to understand patient circumstances, problems, expectations, and needs. Builds rapport and cooperative relationship with patients. Considers how actions or plans will affect members; responds quickly to meet patient needs and resolves problems.

Essential Responsibilities:

* Positions the patient in accordance with the surgeon's instruction, which will give the best exposure for the surgical procedure. Uses standard and specialized equipment to aid in patient positioning.

* Provides the surgeon(s) with appropriate visualization of the operative site using retractors, sponges, digital manipulation, and other techniques according to standards. Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist surgeon with temporary or permanent hemostasis.

* Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes (e.g., sutures, staples, other). Selects and applies appropriate wound dressings.

* Assist Anesthesia with intubation, extubation, blocks and other requests as deemed necessary for care of the patient.

* Assists with patient transport to and from OR, including from gurney to OR bed.

* Must perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:




  • Standing for prolonged periods, frequent walking, reaching (overhead, repetition).
  • Proficient communication, both auditory and verbal, with, patients colleagues and surgeons. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly.
  • Must have ability to life/push/pull > 50lbs
  • May be exposed to radiation, fumes, chemicals, cold, noise, blood and/or bodily fluids, infectious diseases



Requirements:




  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • State Licensure or certification as a First Assist as required by state regulations
  • First Assist with at least 1 year of experience to work in a fast-paced OR.
  • Demonstration of leadership abilities.
