Family Description

Applied R&D (AR) consists of target-oriented research either with the goal of solving a particular problem / answering a specific question or for multi-discipline design, development, and implementation of hardware, software, and systems including maintenance support. Supplies techno-economic consulting to clients. AR work is characterised by its detailed and complex nature in order to systematically combine existing knowledge and practices to further developing and incrementally improving products, operational processes, and customer-specific feature development.

Subfamily Description

Integration, Verification & Testing (IVT) comprises the integration of SW and / or HW or system components into system, platform, product releases, or networks and verifies the integrated entity or network against particular requirements and specifications. Covers setup and maintenance of laboratory and associated equipment, tools, and devices.

  • Defining a test strategy and test cases, and executing these tests to validate features for new software releases of the 1830 Photonic Service Switch in the Optical Transponder domain:

    • Review feature proposal, high level and detail level requirements which are created by system architects, identify an economical way to replicate the feature in test setups and draft required test cases to cover the field application and stress/robustness testcases.
    • Compose test plans for the feature 1rst pass in test tracking tool
    • Once hardware and software deliveries are available, integrate the feature into the planned-out test beds and execute the test plans and track results
    • Create a comprehensive test plan to regression test this new feature to be executed for future releases of the product
    • Execute regression test plans for features introduced in earlier releases of the product.

  • Performing detailed analyses and diagnoses of test results, identifying, and isolating failures and their root causes:

    • Since the product consists of various interacting subsystems and often include new hardware, failures in test results are common during the alpha phase of a release.
    • Analysis of the failures needs to be done by the testers to identify the point of error and to involve the proper developer (SW domain owner, HW owner, Infrastructure owner)
    • This involves active troubleshooting, logfile analysis and debugging techniques.
    • Content and depth of investigation must be comprehensive to allow routing of the defect to the appropriate HW or SW developer.
    • Submitting completed and correct bug reports and validating bug fixes, a proper and comprehensive bug report must be filed in the change management tool.

  • Working on 1830 Photonic Service products and technologies, optical transmission, and WDM optics (verification of transponder aspects):

    • All above duties are in the photonic transponder domain of the product: - validating product features including but not limited to Protections switching, Performance Monitoring, Fault management.

  • Analyzing field reports from customers:

    • Field reports for SW bugs need to be analyzed, reproduced and workarounds to be identified. Once the corresponding SW fixes are available these need to be retested.
    • Updating test cases and automation steps to cover this test escape and validate the fixes.

  • Identifying, planning, installing, and commissioning and integrating test benches to the lab environment:

    • As part of new features, we have very often new hardware subsystems (i.e. new transponders) which require a new testbed or an extension of existing testbeds. Some testcases require physical reconfiguration of the testbeds.
    • This involves mechanical installation, electrical cabling and optical fibering of the product and the associated test gear (spectrum analyzers, OTN and Ethernet test sets, variable optical attenuators)

  • Designing and programming test-automation framework functionality:

    • We are aiming for a 100% regression test coverage through test automation.
    • An extensive SW framework was developed to manage the product and the associated test gear.
    • Area specific test automation framework code libraries were developed modelling the Transponder subsystem to allow testing across multiple network elements (i.e. different protections schemes, fault monitoring, performance monitoring, attenuators,).
    • These libraries need to be enhanced to cover new features and functionality - so new software needs to be developed and existing code needs to be extended/re-factored.

  • Identifying, planning, and programming test automation testcases:

    • Maintaining and updating automated test cases and their configuration data
    • Coding of new testcases using test automation library functionality
    • transform existing manual test plans into automated testcases and aggregate these into autonomous regression batches containing thousands of testcases.
    • Overall: 25% of the time
    • 3 years experience in test automation or software development

  • Interacting with system engineers, hardware development, software development, and field support teams in multi-site, global development teams:

    • This is work environment, so orthogonal to duties, so during total on the job time.
