What your job will be like:

Develop, plan and manage CEBAF operations computing, including short-, medium- and long-term efforts that ensure that the development and maintenance needs of the computing environment of the accelerator and other supported facilities are met, to minimize downtime due to computing issues which reduce machine reliability. The Accelerator Computing Group leader will be a member of the Accelerator Operations Department and a part of the department's management team.

In this role you will:


  • Manage the Accelerating Computing Group. The Accelerator Computing Group consists of two groups, the Accelerator Software Group (ASG) and the Accelerator Computing Environment (ACE) Group, totaling about 20 people.
  • Lead annual planning for the scope of work for the ACG.
  • Manage the operational support of the accelerators by the ACG.
  • Continually monitor CEBAF performance and follow up with the Accelerator Operations staff, Physics staff, and users on computing issues. Attend accelerator operations and maintenance meetings and review maintenance plans to ensure that ACG activities are well communicated and coordinated.
  • Serve as the Accelerator Operations computing liaison to other lab organizations and lab-external organizations for technical and planning activities.
  • Identify upgrade opportunities for obsolete components of the accelerator control system, controls software, and computing infrastructure. Working with the Operations Department and Accelerator Division management, develop and implement plans for improvements and upgrades of the CEBAF control system.
  • Ensure JLab presence in the EPICS community through participation of ACG staff in relevant conferences, workshops, and collaborations. Engage software engineers through participation in upgrade and improvement projects.

Qualifications We Require

Education


  • Master's Degree in Computer Science

Experience


  • 12 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills and demonstrate good judgment.,
  • Experienced in computing environment project management in a fast-paced 24/7 organization,
  • Functional knowledge of accelerator operations and accelerator technical systems found at CEBAF, including RF, magnets and power supplies, beam diagnostics, superconducting RF, control systems, etc.,
  • Working knowledge of the EPICS control system strongly preferred

Qualifications We Prefer

Experience:


  • 8 years of experience working in a research environment
  • At least 5 years of direct experience in accelerator operations
  • At least 3 years of experience managing technical projects in a computing environment
  • At least 2 years of experience leading a matrixed organization in solving technical problems
