Job Duties |
The Research Associate (Project Manager) leads and coordinates research activities across Dr. Linda May's pregnancy-related research studies in a clinical healthcare setting. These research activities include clinical, epidemiological, social and/or bench-top research. Position duties include assist investigators with developing, conducting and evaluating scientific research in the laboratory, clinic, field and/or teaching environments. Additional duties will involve screening and evaluating research subjects according to protocol guidelines. Evaluations include obtaining medical data, directly interacting with subjects to collect data and samples, clinical and/or specimen-based data, abstraction of data from medical records, and follow-up assessments. Duties will also involve assisting in recruitment efforts, and data management and entry. Most of the research duties will be conducted at East Carolina Heart Institute,
FITT building, Ward Sports Medicine building, Vidant Medical Center; however, patient recruitment and data collection may involve activities at Vidant Medical Center, nearby clinics and health departments, or nearby facilities. The Project Manager manages the pregnancy studies at
ECU. Other administrative duties include leading and coordinating regulatory assistance (
IRB,
FDA, granting agencies, sponsors), searching and retrieving literature, interacting with study personnel, record-keeping according to Good Clinical Practices, and report preparation. The Project Manager works independently with close coordination with the Principal Investigators in formulating project budgets, invoicing sponsors for completed research and tracking receivables. The position may serve as a liaison with the
ECU Office of Clinical Trials in handling confidentiality agreements, MOUs, and other required documents to initiate and conduct research projects. Other duties also include providing training and guidance to students, residents, faculty investigators and other research staff.
Administrative Duties and Supervision 10%
This Project Manager serves as a resource supporting the principal investigator and co-investigators with the pregnancy research projects, training faculty, students, residents, and clinical staff in the procedures and methods that are used to conduct research projects. The Project Manager leads development of procedures and quality assurance plans to ensure the research practices are in compliance with campus, state and federal regulations and guidelines under supervision of the PI. The Project Manager manages the pregnancy studies with considerable autonomy. The position must also work effectively with faculty, staff, residents, and students.
Data Integrity and Interpretation 20%
This position is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of certain phases of the assigned project(s) with limited supervision from the principal investigators. Example activities coordination of data collection including ensuring projected deliverables and outcomes are on track. The project manager will be responsible for ensuring that the studies are conducted in accordance with study protocols and will oversees and lead collection methods with considerable independence. A basic knowledge of research principles, study design, and methods of data collection and analysis are required. The position will monitor data and assess its integrity as well as perform basic statistical analyses, including interpreting results.
Laboratory/Clinical Research 70%
The Project Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating the research work conducted in and associated with the pregnancy studies at
ECU with considerable independence. The Project Manager works with Principal Investigators and Co-Investigators to initiate research projects, recruit, and retain research subjects, collect data, generate study reports, and complete protocols in a timely manner. This may include clinical, epidemiological, social and/or bench-top research.

Minimum Education/Experience |
Relevant Master's degree; or relevant BS/BA with three years of relevant work experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |

- Experience in clinical, basic, or translational research
- Record of attention to detail
- Phlebotomy training or willingness to learn and perform phlebotomies (blood collections)
- Proficiency with database applications (e.g., REDCap, PowerPoint, Excel) and strong communication skills both orally and in writing
- Proficiency with scheduling applications (e.g., Outlook)
