Job Summary:

The Department of Medicine (DOM) within the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Specialist to join the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine. This position is a major support of multiple federally funded studies in the research program. In the position, the successful candidate will complete complex processing and shipping of a variety of biological specimens (including blood, urine, sputum, & bronchial samples) precisely according to the protocols. This incumbent will order and maintain inventory of reagents and lab supplies. They will maintain laboratory equipment and oversee laboratory hygiene. The position may be responsible for other lab procedures, including but not limited to: running ELISA, DNA/RNA extraction, and qPCR. The successful candidate will work closely with other research specialists, scientists, nurses, and research coordinators. It is imperative that the Research Specialist be detail oriented, have excellent multi-tasking skills, and the ability to work both independently and within a team. The successful incumbent will have good interpersonal ability and communication skills.


Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.

  • 60% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 15% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 5% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

- Laboratory experience, relevant coursework will be taken into consideration in lieu of work experience

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience processing of human biological specimens (blood, urine, sputum, nasal specimens, stool, breast milk, etc.)
- Experience or training with Hazardous Materials shipping
- Experience with laboratory procedures such as ELISA, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR


Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 80% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

The starting salary for the position is $53,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Additional Information:

This position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills. This position also requires the ability to demonstrate dependability, flexibility and the ability to work in a team environment.

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship.
