Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid works to ensure that qualified students have the opportunity to study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill regardless of their ability to pay. The office serves students at all levels, including graduate and professional school students and coordinates all student financial support for the campus. The office assists in the recruitment, retention and success of students while maximizing available funds, exercising good stewardship of those funds, and performing related research, analysis and program evaluation in support of long-range enrollment and campus goals. In addition, the office provides academic and co-circular support services for scholarships, provides financial literacy and educational tools, and partners with faculty and other student success areas across campus to provide excellent service to low- and middle-income students and other scholarship recipients. The work of the office is public in nature and closely scrutinized by students and their families, lawmakers, faculty and staff at the University, and by the media (local, regional, and national).

Position Summary

The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid (OSSA) seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and organized individual for the position of Assistant Director of Communications. The Assistant Director of Communications will work with the Senior Associate Director of Communications to oversee all communications issued by the office as a part of the communications team that serves students and families (prospective, current, graduate/professional), staff, and colleagues across campus through collaborative projects. This role will support the communications team and run lead on event setup communications for our outreach team and office requests. They will also service as the primary point person for our AI assisted chatbot for the office and support staff in training of Live Chat. The Assistant Director will also work closely with the Senior Assistant Director for Counseling and Outreach in publicizing and promoting OSSA and its financial aid programs. In addition, the Assistant Director will serve as the functional support for user experience testing on all forms used for federal financial aid requirements. They will ensure best practices are in place for both external and internal user experience for the best use to prevent frustration or error. They will also create, update, and maintain the functional video library to assist students in understanding complex financial aid systems and processes. This individual will be a member of the enrollment communications group to ensure understanding of communications across the enrollment unit to help students with the wraparound support experience and will work with the OSSA communications team to help clearly communicate student needs. The AD of Communications will also serve as the programmatic point person for all graduate/professional school communications support requests and web updates.This position includes flexibility for a hybrid work schedule.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills. Experience deliveringhigh-quality service in a high volume, fast-paced office environment and interpreting andexplaining program policy and procedures, preferably in the field of financial aid orstudent services at a college or university setting. Must be able to manage multiple,ongoing priorities; work independently as well as in a team environment and in aprofessional manner.
