Job Summary

Supports the Department's mission of preventing loss of life or injury and minimizing harmful impacts to the environment through monitoring of compliance with safety standards/regulations and University policies/procedures. This position will support the Radiation Safety and Lab Safety Compliance programs.

  • Support the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) with safety program implementation and maintenance
  • Assist with Administrative tasks associated with the submittal and maintenance of all FIU radioactive materials licenses for current and new facilities, with focus on the new Positron Emission Tomography (PET) facility and PET radiopharmaceuticals
  • Assist with Survey instrument pickup, packaging, and delivery
  • Maintain accurate inventory records all radiation-related items such as sealed sources, x-ray devices, surveys, survey instruments, and authorized radioactive material users
  • Radioactive material receipt, processing, delivery, and waste disposal
  • Coordinate and document radiation safety training
  • Develop, review, and update radiation safety documents and procedures
  • Document submittal for new x-ray devices
  • Prepare support documents for regulatory inspections, license renewals, reports, etc.
  • Assist with As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) program dosimetry tracking and communications
  • Coordinate Radiation Control Committee meetings
  • Conduct inspections to assess compliance with hazardous material/equipment use, storage and disposal in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Assist with lab decommissions and closeouts
  • Provide access to research and academic spaces for equipment certifications and maintain equipment inventory records
  • Assist with review of activities and proposals involving hazardous materials/equipment
  • Investigate hazardous material/equipment related incidents and report findings to the associated EH&S safety professional
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Associate's degree and 2 years of relevant experience.
