Position Summary

Under general supervision, trains non-certified drivers to be able to successfully pass their certification test. Trains all Drivers in district policies and procedures for them to successfully drive a school bus and transport student(s) safely. Retrains current drivers in areas of improvement.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instruct individuals and/or small groups in the operation(s) of transportation equipment using classroom instruction and by accompanying them on practice runs to safely transport passengers.
  • Provide instructions in accordance with district policies, procedures and state and federal laws.
  • Explain and demonstrate the construction, function, and coordination of transportation equipment and the accessibility features of the vehicle.
  • Explain the cause of mechanical failures, the requirements when performing a proper pre-trip and post-trip inspection, and the results of equipment abuse.
  • Assist in the preparation of programs for instructing personnel and classes in safety and defensive driving techniques.
  • Assist in the preparation and testing of the ELDT federal mandated program.
  • Explains the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the safety and securement of all special needs' equipment.
  • Explain, demonstrate, and train all areas of school bus State of Michigan and DOT requirements readying trainee for required road test.
  • Compile and maintain records of instruction and prepares training reports.
  • Evaluates performance progress for trainees and provide a weekly summary of feedback and instruction to the Director of Transportation.
  • Provides remedial/refresher training where indicated/when required.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by supervisor.

Education:

This position requires a high school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.).

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:



  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan driver's license and Michigan Commercial Driver's License with the appropriate B-P-S endorsement required.
  • No driving 'points', required.



Experience:




  • Three (3) years of successful school bus driving experience, required.
  • Two years' experience as a Chippewa Valley Bus Driver, preferred.
  • Two years' experience in training school bus drivers, preferred.



Knowledge:




  • Knowledge of the location of streets and building throughout the School District, required.
  • Knowledge of principals and methods for moving people by road, required.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, and district security operation to protect people, required.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar, required.
  • Advanced knowledge of State of Michigan vehicle codes and traffic laws pertaining to School Bus Driving, required.



Abilities:




  • Ability to instruct and train others successfully within a reasonable timeframe, required.
  • Ability to operate transit equipment, required.
  • Ability to read and interpret district policies, guidelines, handbook, and government regulations, required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, required.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and routine reports, required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using the English language with students, administrators and staff, required.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, required.
  • Ability to solve practical problems involving several concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, required.
  • Ability to effectively use basic computer software applications, required.
  • Ability to successfully complete State of Michigan required driving license tests, required.
  • Ability to successfully complete State of Michigan Beginning and Continuing Education classes, required.
  • Ability to successfully complete physical demands tests and drug tests, required.
  • Ability to maintain their CDL license, required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb, push/pull, lift, bend, walk, stand, sit, twist, turn, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of equipment and be able to move/lift students up to 120lbs. Specific vision and hearing abilities as required by DOT for this job include vision, and ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration when driving the bus.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
