Job Duties
The Center for Student Success First Year Cares ( FYC) Retention Specialist is a unique and specialized position focused on serving a specific group of students identified through the First Year Assessment. The First Year Assessment is designed to collect feedback from incoming students about their past experiences and future expectations in order to make their transition to ECU as supportive as possible, with information being used to inform early outreach efforts and predict retention and persistence rates. This position blends the functions of non-clinical student consultation, program coordination of student referrals and intake, systems development for reporting and maintenance of student cases, leadership in addressing factors which contribute to student attrition, and working to improve student success.

This position coordinates the outreach process, support service engagement, and connection to divisional and / or university resources that contributes to holistic student success. This position becomes part of an identified students' First Year Cares Student Success Team, which provides collaborative support and coordinated communication to students as they move throughout their first year at ECU. This position will also work with other staff members to plan, host, and assess workshops, involvement events, and other outreach opportunities.This position must have the ability to work nights and weekends, as needed.

First Year Cares Student Primary Support (45%)

  • Meets regularly with First Year Cares students who have identified as having anxiety, stress, depression and experience loneliness.
  • Serves as the liaison for providing information to the ECU CARES team and other Dean of Students case managers concerning students in need of behavioral intervention and support from Student Affairs professionals
  • Creates necessary reports, assessment reviews, executive memos and other presentations related to the First Year Cares program and outcomes
  • Provides case management for First Year Cares students to:

    • Meet with students, faculty, staff, parents, and others, as needed
    • Maintain detailed records within database
    • Monitor the progress of student cases
    • Communicate to stakeholders within a student case, as needed
    • Gather appropriate information regarding students and individuals of concern for assessment and intervention.





Center for Student Success & ECU Student Success Team Member (45%)

  • Responds to, clarifies, assesses and triages direct, telephone, or electronic information from members of the university community (i.e., students, staff, faculty) concerned about First Year Cares student incidents of actual or potential violence, as well as self-reports or reports from others regarding students experiencing significant stressors to their success
  • Provides information and seamless referrals to the appropriate resources, including law enforcement agencies, Student Affairs, People Operations, Success, and Opportunity, Student Health Services, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, University Counsel, and the threat assessment team (UBCT)
  • Develop and implement appropriate marketing materials and branded items that help promote FYC services
  • Organize, coordinate, and assist in implementing student-focused events to support connection and engagement with the university
  • Cultivates relationships with university and community resources and readily contacts resources on the behalf of students.


Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's Degree; or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and possess two or more years of experience
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive and effective relationships across the campus and within the community;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal issues in higher education;
  • Experience interacting with the public, parents, students, staff, and faculty.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Possess two or more years of higher education experience specific to services supporting college students.
  • Excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills;
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Ability to thoroughly document conversations and actions regarding case management;
  • Team building skills;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, manage multiple tasks, and provide exemplary customer service
