Position Announcement

The Library at Utah Tech University in St. George, Utah, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Librarian faculty position, responsible for the Special Collections program. The Head of Special Collections Librarian performs a variety of oversight, supervision, and operational management duties requiring substantial knowledge of various library and archival systems and procedures to provide access to special collections, to process library materials, and to assist patrons in the use of library resources. This highly visible position operates in a busy environment and involves actively assisting users and monitoring multiple library functions. The Head of Special Collections/Archivist Librarian will also provide reference services that enhance the students' academic needs and will provide instruction and materials for liaison areas as needed. Responsibilities

  • Oversees the collection and processing of materials for Special Collections and Archives.
  • Provides programming for faculty, student, and public workshops as requested and assigned.
  • Coordinates digitization of special collections and archival materials in collaboration with the Systems Librarian.
  • Works with the Dean of the Library to generate grant and fundraising proposals to support Special Collections.
  • Trains and supervises the Library paraprofessional staff (1.5 FTE) and student employees assigned to the Special Collections area.
  • Serves as a library liaison to assigned discipline(s), providing collection development, and instructional support including creation of subject guides or online tutorials.
  • Provides coverage at the reference desk, including possible evening and weekend service.
  • Participates in the library's information literacy instruction program, and teach one or more courses per semester online and/or in a blended format.
  • Serves on campus and Utah Academic Library Consortium committees as assigned.
  • Participates in professional development, local history meetings, and training workshops.
  • Organizes, plans and oversees the Juanita Brooks Lecture Series, collaborating with various contingencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent) from an institution accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Training/certification in special collections and archives management preferred.
  • Demonstrable experience developing and successfully applying innovative solutions to complex workflows.
  • Training and experience in digitization processes strongly preferred; as well as experience with a variety of online resources and strong technology skills.
  • Ability to initiate and follow through on complex projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team and build and maintain effective working relations with colleagues, students, staff, and the public.
  • Commitment to providing proactive customer service.
  • Physical strength and ability to move up to 30 pounds of materials at one time.
  • Strong interest in and knowledge of Utah history preferred.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time (12-month) tenure-track Librarian faculty position. Desired start date of July 1, 2025 for faculty service, as well as pay and benefits. Annual salary of $56,000+ depending on qualifications & experience, with additional compensation available for optional overload teaching.
