The Vice President of Health, Environmental, Safety, and Sustainability (HESS) is responsible for the strategic leadership, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Carpenter Technology Corp's health, environmental, safety, and sustainability programs. This role focuses on ensuring compliance, enhancing sustainability initiatives, and driving a proactive approach to HESS through innovative solutions and stakeholder engagement.

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Provide direct leadership and strategic direction for all HESS programs, processes, metrics, and solutions.
    • Develop and execute comprehensive HESS strategies that align with the company's overall goals and objectives.
  • Sustainability Initiatives
    • Lead the development and execution of sustainability initiatives, including carbon footprint reduction, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and water conservation programs.
    • Champion the adoption of sustainable practices across all levels of the organization and integrate sustainability goals into business strategies.
  • Technical Advisory Support
    • Provide technical advisory support to key stakeholders, including Global HESS Relationship Managers, Site Management, Facilities, and local HESS professionals.
    • Develop, maintain, and enhance global environmental systems and platforms to meet the needs of stakeholders.
  • Risk Management and Compliance
    • Conduct environmental risk assessments, manage due diligence, and oversee permit management processes.
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable health, environmental, and safety regulations and standards.
    • Prepare regular HESS progress, risk management, and compliance reports.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response
    • Manage emergency preparedness and response programs to ensure the safety and well-being of employees and the protection of company assets.
    • Develop and implement robust incident response protocols and procedures.
  • Training and Development
    • Design and deliver training programs focused on HESS best practices for employees at all levels.
    • Foster a culture of safety and environmental awareness and responsibility within the organization.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
    • Enhance communication strategies to engage internal and external stakeholders on HESS issues.
    • Represent the company in environmental forums, industry groups, and with regulatory bodies to advocate for sustainable practices and policies.
  • Performance Metrics and Accountability
    • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to HESS performance.
    • Regularly review and report on progress towards HESS targets, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
  • Sustainable Supply Chain Management
    • Develop and implement sustainable procurement policies to ensure environmental and social responsibility throughout the supply chain.
    • Work closely with suppliers to promote sustainable practices and monitor compliance with environmental standards.
  • Community and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiatives
    • Lead community outreach programs and partnerships that promote environmental education and sustainability.
    • Develop and implement CSR initiatives that align with the company's sustainability goals and values.
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT OF HEALTH, ENVIRONMENTAL, SAFETY, AND SUSTAINABILITY (HESS)

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Safety Management, Engineering, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in HESS roles, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership position.
  • Strong knowledge of health, environmental, safety, and sustainability regulations and best practices.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful HESS programs and initiatives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and drive cross-functional cooperation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar certifications are a plus.
  • High level of proficiency developing Health & Safety and Sustainability systems and strategies focusing the organization on "zero injury & zero excursion mentality".
  • Ability to lead best in class safety systems including behavior based human performance systems.
  • Ability to influence and lead outcomes from the shop floor to the executive office.
  • High level of proficiency in developing and implementing the strategies required to realize growth goals and objectives; effectively communicating strategies and priorities in a manner that is clear and compelling; identifying and eliminating barriers to implementation.
  • Financial acumen with respect to the P&L and balance sheet; strong budgeting and strategic planning skills.
  • Visibly demonstrating a sense of urgency and strong personal ownership to business performance; an ability to assess and develop personnel; an ability to manage the business in conjunction with a set of well-defined processes that can be standardized, measured and improved (i.e., a "process orientation").
  • Effectively engaging and leading the organization across levels and functions - with and without direct reporting lines - in order to realize business goals and objectives; an ability to develop and implement strategies that meet revenue, cost, capital and service requirements.
