Position Summary

The UNM Student Financial Aid Office seeks a dynamic and creative professional interested in working as an Accountant II as part of the department's Funds Management and Scholarships Team. This is an exceptional opportunity for a motivated professional to join a progressive Financial Aid Office.

Reporting to the Financial Aid Manager for Scholarship and Funds Management, the Accountant II position is a key member of the organization and will work in partnership with the Division of Enrollment Management and colleagues throughout the university system.

As a member of the Funds Management and Scholarships Team, the Accountant II is a team leader responsible for the management, oversight, and compliance of financial aid administration for the department. In this role, the incumbent recommends and oversees the implementation of changes to policies and procedures ensuring the accurate, efficient, and timely delivery of student aid in support of broadly defined Enrollment Management objectives and goals. The Accountant II co-leads duties for the Funds Management pertaining to the accounting, funding, and awarding functions within the Banner Financial Aid Module. This position will be responsible for scholarship, athletic, tribal, alternative loans and federal and state accounts and will run and write ad-hoc reports and fund award rules.

Additionally, this position requires an advanced knowledge of federal, state, and institutional programs, policies, and procedures and a critical and creative approach in developing strategies to maximize the use of financial aid in support of recruitment and retention goals.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success. A Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred. The successful candidate will have excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, a high sensitivity to cultural issues, competency for critically analyzing processes, and an understanding of the innovative uses of technology in a higher education setting (Banner experience preferred). The Accountant II must be highly organized, detail oriented, able to co-lead a diverse staff, creative, energetic, and possess a strong commitment to superior customer service and an understanding of the importance of financial aid in recruitment and retention.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible position.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 12 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Candidates for this
position should demonstrate the following characteristics, skills, and
abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and
    institutional financial aid programs, regulations, and policies.
  • Strong technical skills and experience with a variety
    of software solutions including the Ellucian Banner ERP system,
    AwardSpring, OnBase, and Microsoft products.
  • A commitment to working with diverse students and their
    families.
  • Strong analytic skills and data-informed decision
    making.
  • Experience budgeting, monitoring and reconciling
    federal, state, and institution aid programs within a university setting.
  • Experience managing the accounting functions within a
    student financial aid office.
  • Effective communication
    skills and a flexible, creative, and collaborative approach to working with
    various teams.
