About the Department:

The Department of Health Administration and Policy (HAP) educates students and conducts research in health systems management, health policy and health informatics. The department fields academic programs in Health Informatics at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels to prepare new leaders and experts in the use of technology and evidence-based decision making to improve public health and the quality of health care.

The department prepares students for interdisciplinary roles (entry level and advanced) as health informaticists and data analysts in a variety of roles (consultants, technical support staff, program managers, researchers, and administrators) in a variety of organizations (health care organizations, research and technology firms). Students learn and apply technical skills to address the challenges of a rapidly changing and diverse healthcare environment with hands-on experience in course labs and clinical settings (including the School of Nursing's Mason and Partners Clinics) (https://publichealth.gmu.edu/mapclinics). Students gain experience working with healthcare providers serving culturally diverse patient populations in the northern Virginia area which provides them with the necessary skills to support the delivery of health care where it is needed the most.

About the Position:

Health Informatics Faculty contribute to the mission of the department, college, and university through innovative and impactful education, research, and service.

Responsibilities:



  • Teaches across the curriculum;
  • Mentors graduate and doctoral students in research projects;
  • Engages in academic and professional service that advances the School's mission;
  • Participates in faculty governance;
  • Develops and maintains an extramurally funded, independent research program;
  • Produces high impact, peer-reviewed publications; and
  • Engages in multidisciplinary collaborations.


Required Qualifications:



  • An earned PhD (or equivalent research doctorate) from an accredited institution in Health Informatics or related field;
  • Expertise in effectively teaching in both undergraduate and graduate courses;
  • Employment as a registered nurse in a health care service organization, government agency, professional organization, or academic setting;
  • Experience mentoring and/or teaching nursing students and other nurses;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective teaching, research dissemination, and collaboration;
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret complex health data and generate meaningful insights;
  • Skill in using innovative, student centric teaching methods and educational technologies, including use of learning management systems;
  • Strong mentoring skills to support the academic and professional growth of students;
  • Ability to design, conduct, and manage research projects in health informatics;
  • Proven ability to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in health informatics;
  • Ability to present complex information clearly and engagingly to diverse audiences;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and external partners;
  • Ability to lead and manage interdisciplinary research teams;
  • Capacity to secure external research funding and manage funded projects;
  • Ability to develop and enhance health informatics curricula that meet industry and CAHIIM accreditation standards as well as academic requirements;
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in teaching and learning practices;
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing technologies and methodologies in health informatics;
  • Innovative mindset to explore new research areas and teaching approaches;
  • Willingness to contribute to departmental, college, and university service roles; and
  • Ability to engage with industry, professional organizations, and the broader community to advance the field of health informatics.


Early career (tenure-track) applicants will have:



  • Postdoctoral training or academic teaching experience;
  • Identified focused program of research with the potential to obtain external funding; and
  • An established record of peer-reviewed publications.


Mid-career or Senior applicants seeking tenure upon hire will have:



  • Excellent research skills as measured by a record of extramural research funding;
  • A sustained record of high-impact, peer-reviewed publications;
  • Demonstrated skills in mentorship of junior faculty related to grantsmanship and publications; and
  • An academic record that meets criteria for tenure in the CPH.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Postdoctoral training or academic teaching experience as an adjunct or full-time faculty; and
  • Experience writing academic research grant proposals.
