Overview

The Cartographic Technician will aid BLM technical experts in creating, revising, and documenting processes, data quality processes, and metadata, for the 100K Mapping program of the BLM. The cartography technician will provide support to ensure that products, workflows, forms, reports, and their associated documentation.

Work Environment:

    Location: Remote from Colorado (must reside in Colorodo for consideration).
  • Travel <10% of the time (some occasional on-site visits required).

Responsibilities

  • Acquires, compiles, processes, converts, updates, edits, and attributes spatial data files. Uses computer technology to acquire digital files and documentation from FTP and various Internet/Intranet Web sites.
  • Assists Federal Staff with technical consulting in areas of automated cartographic design, compilation, and construction.
  • Provides computer technology skills to produce intermediate-scale (100K) National Mapping Program maps, thematic maps, illustrations (printing, on-demand plotting, online release) and other graphics (such as DRG map images and georeferenced PDFs) for both internal map compilation and external off-set printing. Helps define requirements for Python program scripts to process digital data files, assign line weights, polygon shades, and place annotation for plotting purposes.
  • Production is conducted in Windows systems, using multiple versions of ArcGIS Software, Adobe Creative Suite applications, as well as other supporting hardware and software.
  • Researches, collects, and collates data from Master Title Plats (MTPs), federal and state agency data, county assessor data, or other sources of digital data to assist in designing and executing complex multi-sheet maps which often require a departure from standard methodologies and practices to produce, and many times involve the use of substandard and/or conflicting source data at varying scales.
  • Edits and maintains cartographic database integrity by ensuring that data input procedures have been followed, and designs procedures for complex data analysis and retrieval. Creates and maintains metadata for use by others.
  • Assists in the production of any additional documentation as appropriate to complete the effort as required by the BLM 100K map production process and as directed.
  • Communicates with data stewards, resource management staff, and GIS Specialists throughout the organization for the prioritization, review, and revision of data, symbology, disclaimers, and map collar content to produce the 100K map product.
  • Responsible for peer review of map products according to the Quality Assurance and Quality Control SOPs.
  • Documents projects to ensure transparency, including updating project tracking mechanisms as map revisions move through the standard process.
  • Contributes to standard map templates, layer files, and documentation in the interest of efficiency and standardization.
  • Attend regular meetings to review work progress and schedule.
  • Submit weekly and monthly reports which summarizes finished and ongoing tasks in a format agreed to by the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).


Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Skilled in the use of ArcGIS Enterprise systems and web services (3-years of experience or greater preferred).
  • Professional knowledge of geodatabase management, including data standards and legacy data incorporation.
  • Professional experience with ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, Portal, Hub, and various applications.
  • Strong productive collaboration and communication skills with other specialists.

The pay range for this position in Colorado is $55,00000 - $65,000.00 per year; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
