DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION



  1. Interview, assist in the selection, evaluation, counseling, and discipline of staff in the Sterile Processing Department; as appropriate, may assist in the development of the unit's budget.
  2. Train staff in the processing and distribution of surgical and medical supplies and equipment to all Hospital departments. As appropriate, prepare unit statistical reports and participate in infection control activities and committees.
  3. Plan, assign, and review the work of the support staff of the Sterile Processing Department.
  4. Assist in developing and implementing quality assurance programs for the department.
  5. Confer with physicians and other department management staff to resolve operational problems, promote communications, and ensure delivery of quality services.
  6. Maintain an adequate inventory of medical supplies and equipment in Sterile Processing and patient care areas.
  7. Monitor sterilizer records daily and initiate a recall of sterilized items when necessary.
  8. Applies expert knowledge in ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards and processes that affect reprocessing.
  9. Maintain knowledge of all instrument reprocessing procedures and processes.
  10. Oversee all chemical, biological, and mechanical sterilization for the department.
  11. Assist the manager in the review, development, and administration of SPD policies.
  12. Serve as the expert to SPD staff on all sterile processing issues, policies, and practices.
  13. Develop and present three in-service training sessions annually for SPD staff on instrumentation and/or equipment.
  14. Attend SPD supervisor/ technician meetings and other staff meetings.
  15. Communicate effectively with SPD staff, customers, and management regarding SPD practices, policies, procedures, etc.
  16. Communicate with OR management and staff regularly to facilitate effective working relationships.
  17. Train new SPD staff in departmental practices, policies, and procedures. Maintain records of all training activities.
  18. As appropriate, may be involved with the distribution of supplies and materials management.
  19. Develop, coordinate, and maintain daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of unit coverage and continuity of care.
  20. Monitor time and attendance in alignment with MU Health Care policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely submittal/approval for payroll purposes.
  21. May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS




  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification by Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification by National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).



  • Three (3) years of sterile processing experience.




PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS




  • Associate's degree in a technical discipline or the equivalent.



  • Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) and Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) certification by HSPA is strongly preferred within one (1) year.



  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience.



  • Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
