GENERAL SUMMARY:

Incumbents provide leadership and technical supervision on their assigned units including the Simulation and Treatment machines.

Incumbents serve as a role model for behavior and performance for their team members.

Incumbents coordinate activities on assigned simulation and treatment units.

Incumbents provide training and orientation for new staff and students to simulation and treatment unit.

Incumbents complete on time performance evaluations for team members and students.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical - (CT Simulator)



  • Serve as the technical and procedural expert on scanner operation and scanning protocols including CT scanner components, scan control, reconstruction parameters, image thickness and limitations of Computerized Tomography.
  • Prepare and position patients for using immobilization and protective equipment.
  • Produce high quality cross sectional images in accordance with MD orders.
  • Develop and maintain CT Simulation protocol book.
  • Maintain all CT Simulation policies/procedures and ensure align with main campus.
  • Accurately document patient and simulation parameters in the EMR for daily treatment delivery.
  • Must complete and maintain IV Insertion and Contrast Reaction Training
  • Transcribe contrast and IV orders into patient EMR per MD orders.
  • Load and operate power injectors for contrast media administration.
  • Utilize EMR to assess and evaluate potential risks associated with contrast administration.


(Treatment Unit)



  • Serve as the technical and procedural expert on their treatment unit(s) and perform all duties of a radiation therapist daily.
  • Accurately document radiation treatment delivery and all technical parameters.
  • Develops and maintains comprehensive procedural documents for clinical and technical procedures (review annually).
  • Serves as a super-user for new devices, equipment and software and uses this knowledge to lead training of staff and senior therapist
  • Facilitates the assessment of training and new immobilization devices and equipment


Human Resources:



  • Model exemplary behavior and clinical practice for staff and students daily.
  • Coordinates coverage on each area while minimizing overtime daily.
  • Facilitate attendance at continuing education conferences and staff meetings as required.
  • Provide orientation to new staff and students as needed.
  • Facilitate involvement and training of team members in all facets of procedures and tasks.
  • Provide on time performance review feedback for staff/Senior RTs.
  • Develop and complete unit specific competencies for staff as required.
  • Adheres to the Hospital's Corrective Action Policy when needed.
  • Oversees performance management issues with staff and senior therapists by providing one on one coaching and mentoring as needed.
  • Manages the vacation request process while ensuring adequate coverage in all areas.
  • Works with other team leaders to draft and finalize weekly staff schedules.
  • Resolves unexpected coverage issues within the RTT group.
  • Adapts to an evolving and dynamic work environment and responds effectively to organizational challenges.



Quality Management and Safety:



  • Performs and documents pre-treatment QA checks for all new patients and new fields prior to initial treatment as outlined in the dept Quality Management program.
  • Review all active charts for completeness and accuracy. Anticipate changes and remind responsible individuals.


  • Ensure written and verbal directives are acknowledged and documented in accordance with existing hospital policy.
  • Delay treatment whenever there is a question about technique or prescription.
  • Report all patient condition changes immediately to nurse and/or physician and withholds treatment until instructed to proceed.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical protocols, department and hospital policies. Reports noncompliant events.
  • Serve as liaison between all role groups to coordinate safe, effective patient care and maximize patient throughput.
  • Maintain treatment room and console according to JCAHO specifications and department policy.
  • Report equipment failure or malfunction immediately to appropriate physics or engineering staff
  • Perform monthly environmental rounds and collaborate with Facilities Manager to ensure treatment rooms are 100% compliant with the hospital's Environment of Care standards.
  • Ensures immobilization devices are maintained by performing quarterly inspections and coordinating necessary repairs.



Administrative:



  • Works with the Technical Director(s) to maintain current procedure guidelines that are consistent throughout all RO dept locations. (Reviews annually).
  • Personally upholds all hospital and department policies and procedures and ensures staff follows them daily.


  • Ensure daily billing is accurate and complete daily.
  • Ensure necessary equipment and supplies are available for all procedures daily.
  • Works with BioMed to maintain equipment inspections and repairs.
  • Coordinate and schedule all equipment repairs and preventative maintenance schedules with appropriate vendors, engineers and/or medical physicist.
  • Provides back-up management coverage for Radiation Therapy Director(s) and/or Manager(s) as needed.
  • Works with physicians and dosimetry to coordinate urgent patient scheduling
  • Maintains supply inventory by following procurement procedures and processing eBuy transactions
  • Complies statistics as requested to support operational analyses

Qualifications

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Experience with advanced radiation therapy techniques, delivery systems and sub-systems

Technical problem-solving skills

Interpersonal skills

Teaching skills and a willingness to work with therapy students

Physical reach to work wiquipment as high as 5-6 feet above the floor

Physical strength to lift accessories up to 40 pounds in weight

Capable of comfortably lifting and inserting patient accessories into the treatment units at all possible treatment angles during patient treatments.

Physical strength to assist or lift impaired patients from a wheel chair or a stretcher

Physical strength to move patients to achieve exact treatment position

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS

Current Massachusetts Radiologic Technologist-Radiation Therapy License required

ARRT Certification or equivalent certification accepted by the State of Massachusetts with active registration and CE compliance required


EDUCATION:

Must be a graduate of an ARRT recognized program or equivalent in radiation therapy technology, BS required if graduated after 2000. Associate degrees will be accepted for candidates that completed their education prior to 2000.


EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 4 years' experience as a radiation therapist at MGH, or recent 5 years at an outside institution

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

4-5 Senior or Staff therapists

Therapy students


FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Minimize overtime of team members

Maximize utilization of equipment resources

Ensure complete and accurate billing

Extreme care of expensive equipment and devices


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Duties can be performed in the following locations -Lunder, Proton Center, CoxLL, NWH, Emerson or other satellites.

Incumbents work in close physical proximity to staff and therapy students.

Must be willing to work flexible hours/days depending on patient volume and department needs.
