American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world's largest scientific membership association. ACS Publications is a Division of ACS and has all the characteristics of a medium-large scientific and technical publishing organization. It is one of two Divisions charged with serving the dual function of generating a reliable annual surplus to support the Society's programmatic activities, while also fulfilling a core goal of the Society in advancing knowledge in the field of chemistry and the chemical industry.

The Division

The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS Publications) publishes over 80+ high-quality scholarly journals, numerous eBooks, and the weekly periodical Chemical & Engineering News focused on chemistry and chemistry-related topics. It provides its customers and the worldwide scientific community with a comprehensive collection of high-quality information products and services for the practice and advancement of the chemical sciences.

The Department

The newly formed Transformation department was created to support multiple transformative initiatives and activities by identifying, prioritizing, and implementing and supporting the implementation of strategic business initiatives aligned to the Division's strategic goals. The department will communicate the vision, goals and rationale behind transformation initiatives to all relevant stakeholders highlighting why and how each initiative contributes to the overall organizational goals, both today and in the future. The remit extends beyond isolated changes, as the department will strive to foster collaboration between relevant teams across the Division.

Position Summary

Within the ACS Publications Transformation department, the Program Manager provides support with the identification and prioritization of strategic business initiatives across the Division aligned to the Must Win Battles. Paying particular attention to overlapping priorities, changing priorities, resource constraints, implementation concerns, and timelines will also be part of this role. The Program Manager will also communicate on the outcome execution of strategic business initiatives. The Program Manager will work across the Division. This role also focuses on the people side of large transformative changes such as those involving new or revised business processes, new or revised products, systems and technology changes, and culture. The Program Manager supports creating and implementing change management strategies to drive faster adoption and higher utilization to accelerate the benefit realization, the return on investment (ROI) and achievement of results and outcomes. You will report to the Vice President of Transformation.

Responsibilities

1. Responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the Division's strategic initiatives aligned to Division's strategy. Monitor progress, identify risks, draft risk mitigation plans for leadership, draft communication plans, develop initiative evaluation criteria, capturing budget spend (as applicable), on a monthly or more request cadence prepares concise reporting on metrics that are initiative specific. Support of execution of SAFe portfolio management methodologies to drive value to the Division's customers (external and internal).

2. Establishes and supports strategic change practices for key initiatives in conjunction with other colleagues in Transformation and across the Division.

a. Creates and executes strategic communications roadmap for assigned strategic initiatives with impacts across organization.

b. Guides successful communication of organizational initiatives and projects to diverse stakeholder audiences. Develops and oversees execution of communications plans.

c. Plans, writes, edits, and creates content for a variety of internal communications mediums, such as intranet, newsletters, email, posters, or other visual mediums. Creates messages, scripts, and presentations for senior executives and other leaders to present to employees in written or spoken forums.

d. Aligns internal communications messages are consistent across all mediums. Ensures various and complex audiences are consistent with other internal communications and external communication messages and branding guidelines.

e. Solicits and responds to feedback from staff and adjust communications content accordingly.

f. Defines, measures, and tracks key performance indicators and metrics for knowledge management in partnership with leadership and key stakeholders.

Required Skills



  • 8+ years of experience with focus on change management
  • Must be Prosci certified and experienced in use of methodology and tools
  • Experience working on transformative projects
  • Proven ability to work across functional areas at all levels
  • Very proficient organization abilities
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and interpersonal skills
  • Possesses and displays growth mindset
  • Entry-level knowledge of SAFe portfolio methodology with expectation this knowledge will grow over time
  • Proficiency in MS Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)



This role can be based in in our Washington, D.C. or Columbus, OH office. A reasonable rate of compensation per year is listed for each location



  • DC: between $122,000 to $165,000 per year.


  • OH: between $110,000 to $148,000 per year.
