Job Summary:

Designs and supervises manufacture of systems and supporting x-ray experiments. Plans and implements upgrading and maintenance of any of the following: vacuum, mechanical, electrical, and computer systems.

Please note:

Some tasks need to be performed in a confined space.

LS-CAT is located at Argonne National Laboratory (a DOE facility), therefore the incumbent will be required to complete all required DOE safety training courses.

The LS-CAT facilities operate 24 hours a day. Staff are required to work some nights and weekends as well as be on call.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Design and supervise manufacture of systems supporting x-ray experiments at the LS-CAT sector at the APS. These systems may include new mechanical support systems, motion control systems, programmable logic controllers, vacuum environments and computer control software.
  • Plan and implement upgrading and maintenance of any of the following: vacuum, mechanical, electrical and computer systems at the LS-CAT facility. Coordinate work of outside contractors and possibly supervise term employees for specific projects.
  • Responsible for several areas of facility safety compliance, including electrical safety, hoisting and rigging safety, and machine shop safety inspections and access policy control. Plan and implement electrical safety inspection compliance for the LS-CAT facility. Conduct APS sector orientations for users of the LS-CAT beamline.
  • Provide direct support to LS-CAT staff and users.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or masters degree with 5 or more years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and training with 15 or more years of experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
  • Several years of experience working at a synchrotron facility and/or in a similar environment.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Expertise in at least two of the following areas:
  • Mechanical systems (design and fabrication of precision equipment);
  • Vacuum equipment (pumps: ion, turbomolecular and mechanical; UHV and HV equipment: conflat, FK and ISO components and systems);
  • Motin control (stepper and servo controlled motion systems, including translation and rotation stages); or
  • Experimental computing systems (computer interfacing to motion control and measurements; EPICS, VME, and PC board based experimental control).
  • PLC system design
  • Ability to create detailed mechanical drawings and electrical schematics suitable for construction.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience coordinating the work of technicians and other technical support workers.
  • Previous experience in x-ray synchrotron beamline design and construction.

  • Expertise in three or more of the areas listed in Minimum Competencies, Item #1.

Target hiring range for this position will be between $98,000 to $110,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
