Job Description

Basic Function and Responsibility
The Department & Clinical Director is accountable for ensuring the Department of Anesthesiology achieves the School of Medicine's mission and vision of teaching, research and patient care. This leadership position has the responsibility for working with and assisting the Department Chair to implement the strategic vision and clinical operations of the department. A basic understanding of academic medicine and research, a broad scope of knowledge of clinical practice management, and sound proficiency of financial management is essential. As a leader of the School of Medicine, this position is expected to lead the development of a culture that is driven by the core values of integrity, honesty, and hard work.

Core Duties and Responsibilities
The Department & Clinical Director is responsible for developing and directing the long-range strategic business plan to ensure continued success for a more than $45 million clinical operation. This includes performing business analysis, preparing program expansion, and overseeing implementation plans for new programs. Other important duties include faculty and staff recruitment, compensation development, and budget management.

Financial Responsibilities
The Department & Clinic Director will develop and monitor the department budget and work collaboratively with SOM and Department to manage financial and personnel resources. Knowledge of fund-based accounting is important to ensure appropriate use and allocation of clinical revenues, state funds, grants and contracts, and gifts and endowments. Management will include:

* Developing the applicable resources to financially plan, budget, and account for various the academic, teaching, and clinical operations in the department.
* Establishing financial management policies within the department to ensure compliance with the policies and procedures of the Department, School of Medicine, and University.
* Coordinating and preparing regular financial reporting which is provided to the Department Chair, Hospital Administration, and School of Medicine Business Office Leadership.
* Working with support personnel and primary investigators to prepare grant and budget proposals and assist with post-award management.
* Developing annual operational budgets for the entire department.

Supervision
The Department & Clinic Director is responsible for supervisory oversight of all department staff and faculty including ensuring completion of all required compliance expectations in accordance with MUHC and University policies. The Director partners with SOM Human Resources to seek guidance on execution of HR functions and processes, including workforce planning and design, recruiting and onboarding, career development and performance management, employee relations, compensation and classification, HR programs and policy implementation, and organizational effectiveness, culture, and change management execution.

Clinical Oversight
The Department & Clinic Director is responsible for developing the necessary processes to assure all clinical services and procedures are captured and billed in a timely manner. Important financial responsibilities also include:
* Analyzing billing trends, reasons for denials and unpaid claims, and reimbursement patterns from billable activities.
* Working collaboratively with University Physicians to improve revenue cycle processes, provide necessary reporting and information to Department chair, and provide feedback to all department providers.
* Overseeing billing processes and practices to ensure compliance with federal, state, UP policies.
* Evaluating department incentive practice plans to ensure appropriate reward of clinical productivity and to pursue opportunities to meet department expectations and benchmarks.
* Preparing operational reports for Department Chair and other interested parties.
* Providing analysis and recommendation concerning clinical productivity, proficiencies, and profitability.
* Working collaboratively with MUHC leadership to ensure operational success for anesthesia staffing coverage.

Shift

Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration or a related area.

Requires minimum of five years' experience in a healthcare environment and demonstrated success in the management of complex programs and activities. Experience in an academic healthcare environment is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree such as an MBA, MPA, MHA or MSN is preferred.

Progressively advancing career track and proven experience with leading and managing overall business functions of a multi-million dollar, multi-facility, and multi-disciplinary clinical operation.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $140,000 - $175,000 Annually
Grade: A-005 Executive
