Job Description Summary

Material Handler role for the chemical manufacturing plant in New Martinsville, WV. Strong Safety/Environmental commitment required. Must be able to monitor, operate, and report upon responsible areas within the New Martinsville Site.

Job Description

Health, Safety, and Environmental

  • Fully knowledgeable in an routinely applies all company and applicable regulatory HSE Standards, practices, and procedures including confined space entries.
    • Active member of Safety Process.
    • Responsible to assist in removing equipment from service, prepare, secure, lock out, and establish permits for maintenance of equipment
    • Reports all incidences immediately and responds to emergencies by taking appropriate operational actions, such as shutting down the process whenever necessary and notifying supervision and/or security.
    • Shovels debris, picks up and disposes stray materials, etc. Responsible for using good housekeeping practices.

Process Operations

  • Develop an understanding of the manufacturing process and understands the implication of operational decisions and actions.
  • Monitor and record settings on equipment such as flow-meters, pump speeds, temperatures, and pressures that affect speeds of chemical reactions, quality, or yields.
  • Reads and acts upon daily area operating instructions.
  • Obtain samples of products and perform QC tests to ensure qualifications are met and be able to make adjustments based on QC results.
  • Provide shift change relief. Communicate effectively with other personnel regarding operational conditions at time of shift change.
  • Conducts frequent tours of manufacturing area to ensure good operating condition of all equipment. Identify and resolve mechanical and/or process-related issues. Checks levels, temperatures, pressures, etc. Communicates findings to supervision.
  • Works regularly assigned shifts and provides a fair and equitable to peers' amount of overtime coverage for co-worker absences, illnesses, vacations, holidays, etc.
  • Must be able to complete physical aspects of job, including climbing stairs, climbing ladders, operating valves, motors, etc.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot problems with equipment and processes to optimize and repair deficiencies. Maintenance activities are required within this position through the use of tools or adjustments to control loops.
  • Loading and Unloading of materials. Utilizing bulk trucks and packaged containers.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as defined by supervision

In accordance with the company's Quality Policy, responsible for and authorized to perform following actions as applicable:

  • Support achieving plant Quality Objectives and other KPI goals as applicable
  • Initiate action to report and prevent the occurrence of any non-conformity relating to the product, process, and quality system.
  • Control further processing or delivery of non-conforming product until the deficiencies or unsatisfactory condition have been corrected.
  • Use the Corrective and Preventative Action program and Internal Audit process to initiate, recommend and resolve product issues or quality system failures.

  • Cooperates with any co-worker, supervisor, maintenance worker, etc. to guarantee safe, efficient operation and maintenance of your responsible area.

Physical Requirements

  • Walking or standing most of the day, with some sitting. Frequently bends/stoops, squats, crawls, reaches above shoulder, kneels, and balances. Must be able to climb ladders, stairs frequently throughout the day. Must be able to carry/lift up to 50 pounds. The hands and fingers are frequently used for pushing/pulling, simple and firm grasping. Occasionally for fine manipulation. Employee must occasionally use the head and neck in a static position, and for rotational, flexing and extension movements. Must be able to evacuate unassisted in an emergency. Must be able to wear a respirator.

Environmental Conditions

  • Employee's activities occur both inside and outside. There is exposure to extreme temperatures, moisture, humidity and loud noise. Gases, dusts, odors, fumes and mists associated with normal chemical plant operation may be present. In production areas, employee must wear company-supplied protective equipment such as a uniform, hard hat, safety glasses, respirator, gloves, slicker and boots.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • High school or equivalent required, some post-secondary work preferred.
  • Preferred Chemical Plant Experience or equivalent training.
  • Reading, math, written language and memory abilities are essential to performing this job.

Interfaces / Working relationships (Internal to organization and external relationships, even how processes are inter-related)

  • This role interfaces with all levels in the New Martinsville Site
  • The Material Handler will also be required to interface with Bayer personnel on a routine basis to coordinate emergency issues, utility issues, maintenance issues, etc.
