Requisition Id13703

Overview and Purpose:
The Integrated Computational Earth Sciences (ICES) Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED) is seeking a Full Stack Developer to design, develop, and deploy back-end and database technologies to facilitate data management, distribution, and archiving; to oversee and coordinate front-end development for data discovery, access, and analysis of geospatial data; and collaborate with DevOps engineers in full stack deployment for the next generation Earth System Grid Federation 2 - US (ESGF2-US) Project. The successful candidate will apply technical expertise and database and data management skills to develop and support tools and algorithms that facilitate indexing and use of data and metadata for data discovery and access. CSED focuses on transdisciplinary computational science and analytics at scale to enable scientific discovery across the physical sciences, engineered systems, and biomedicine and health. It develops community applications, data assets, and technologies and provides assurance to build knowledge and impact in novel, crosscut-science outcomes.

The candidate will be a technical staff member within the ICES Group of the Advanced Computing Methods for Physical Sciences Section in CSED. ICES is focused on the conduct of world-class research and development in Earth system modeling; model-data integration, large scale data management, analytics and machine learning; and model benchmarking at DOE's Leadership Computing Facilities (LCFs) and its National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). The ICES Group has specific strengths in numerical methods, simulation, data management, and analysis focused on terrestrial biogeochemistry and hydrology, atmospheric and ocean dynamics, aerosols, regional climate, ice sheets and sea level rise, and the global carbon cycle.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a diverse and multidisciplinary team of software architects and engineers, computational scientists, and Earth system modelers across DOE labs in developing and deploying a data backplane to support ESGF2-US.

  • Design, develop, and implement software for large-scale data management, including data ingest, search, discovery, distribution, and archiving across wide-area ESnet-interconnected sites and the global Internet.

  • Develop technical papers and documentation and support user needs with documentation, tutorials, and hackathons.

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in computer science, computational science, data science, or related technical subjects or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 4+ years of experience with data system architecture, developing data management software, or DevOps engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with scalable databases, scalable index and search solutions, and frameworks that integrate these capabilities, including Globus Search or ElasticSearch.

  • Experience managing virtual infrastructure on commercial or on-premise cloud architectures.

  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, Kafka, container management, and web servers.

  • Familiarity with collaborative development methodologies and development automation tools, including Git/GitHub and Slack.

  • Familiarity with methods and solutions for computer and network security and data provenance, integrity, and security.

  • Strong motivation to support DOE and international researchers through innovative solutions.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse and multidisciplinary scientists and engineers.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to report regular progress and support user documentation, tutorials, and hackathons.
