Overview

The Behavioral Health Core Faculty:
* Teaches and enhances resident interpersonal, communication, and counseling skills used with patients and their families;
* Teaches residents to assess and treat patient psychiatric and substance disorders and psychosocial problems (behavioral, psychological, emotional, and interpersonal);
* Provides support to residents/faculty and fosters resident personal and professional growth;
* Serves a range of administrative functions for the Residency program; and
* Provides education on psychosocial assessments, therapeutic counseling, crisis intervention services to patients and providers when needed;
* Help develop behavioral health curriculum for residents' education;
* Be a lead faculty in wellness for the residency program;
* Serve as the Program's Director of Scholarship and assist residents and core faculty with research, publications, posters, and conference presentations.


Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Precept residents alongside faculty physicians to enhance attention to interpersonal and behavioral elements of patient care;
  • Meet individually with residents to discuss challenging patients;
  • Meet individually with residents to review videos of patient care encounters and improve physician-patient communication;
  • Present lectures and arrange guest speakers as the core of the behavioral medicine didactic curriculum for residents;
  • Facilitate monthly resident support group meetings/Balint group discussion;
  • Facilitate patient-oriented discussion group with senior residents, as requested;
  • Coordinate, conduct, analyze and disseminate data for required ACGME evaluations: (i) quarterly 360 evaluations of residents; (ii) quarterly resident self-evaluations; (iii) annual graduate surveys; and (iv) annual resident evaluations of faculty;
  • Assist in organizing residency retreats for residents and faculty physicians;
  • Attend faculty meetings and participate in ongoing evaluation of Program and residents, including resident remediation processes.
  • Serve as a facilitator between faculty and residents in addressing difficult situations;
  • Ensure that regulatory requirements/mandated reporting, as related to social services, community agencies, and alleged abuse/neglect situations, are met.
  • Identify ways to improve customer satisfaction outcomes through collaboration, development and implementation of action plans;
  • Provide advocacy by ensuring the patient and family are actively involved or represented in planning for care;
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate; support groups and educational forums/materials designed to meet the special needs of providers;
  • Enhance knowledge of department and organization by participation in various education programs;
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and education programs and maintain competence in order to perform duties for ages served by residency program;
  • Provide consultation and counseling services to providers re: patients in crisis and provide psychiatric assessments of patients seen as potentially suicidal, as needed;.
  • Serve as a member on the Residency Clinical Competency Committee;
  • Demonstrate broad background of training and experiences with various patient populations;
  • Maintain working relationships with other clinicians/agencies outside the clinic for patient resources;
  • Assist family medicine residents and faculty with the management of patients with behavioral health conditions;
  • Provide didactic teaching related to behavioral health topics;
  • Assist the Program Director with the recruitment of high caliber, diverse residents by actively participating in the interview, selection, and ranking process of residency candidates;
  • Complete and submit residents' evaluations in a timely manner.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited school of Social Work

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

  • Holds and maintains LCSW licensure according to the IL Department of Professional Regulation
  • Membership in the National Association of Social Workers preferred
  • Membership in specialized professional organization preferred

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Passing the Driver's License Check and/or Credit Check (for those positions requiring).
  • Passing the WI Caregiver Background Check and/or IL Health Care Workers Background Check.
  • Must be able to follow written/oral instructions.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize information.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with absolute confidentiality.
  • Working knowledge of software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to make decisions independently or to escalate issues as needed.
