Position Summary:

The job involves working with Ventura Foods R&D, Legal, Quality, Sales, Marketing, Operations, Packaging Development, Finance, Procurement, Engineering Teams; External Partners including Customers, Co-Manufacturers, Suppliers, Consultants, etc. and Regulatory Agencies, Governmental Bodies and Trade Associations to ensure our branded and custom edible fats and oils commodities meet global food laws and regulations. Periodically, it also causes grinning from ear to ear and fist-pumping when you are sitting at home watching a TV commercial or driving along in your car and spot a billboard advertising one of our customer's menu items that contains a product you had a hand in creating the Ingredients Statement, or the Nutrition Facts Table. We can't promise your unbridled enthusiasm won't annoy your friends and family but that's just how you roll.

The Right Candidate:

This person exhibits humility by being self-confident and proposing and implementing solutions to complex regulatory and emerging regulatory challenges while being open to other points of view. The candidate is hungry, meaning they are self-motivated and diligent, but also looking to share regulatory guidance across the enterprise. Finally, this candidate is an interpersonally appropriate and aware individual.

Experience in global food laws and regulations across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa; Latin America and North America within the food industry is a plus but we recognize that everyone hasn't been lucky enough to live that dream yet. That said, we are open and eager to coach the humble, hungry and smart candidate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Food Law, Food Regulatory, Food Science, or related field.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for local regulatory compliance performance and regulatory compliance employees which includes training, planning and assigning daily work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems related to regulatory activities. Trains other employees as appropriate.
  • Responsible for overall projects, customers' requests and enquiries tracking, communication to R&D, Legal, Packaging Development, Sales, Marketing, Operations, Engineering, Senior Technical Services Staff, Customers and suppliers.
  • Responsible for label creation, revision, evaluation and validation prior to manufacturing packet distribution to the plants. Design labels to meet customers' specifications and requirements. Utilize nutrition database for product development, recipe analysis, nutrition analysis and government compliant labeling. Responsible for the regulatory elements for minor and major projects from concept to commercialization. Adhering to all safe practices and GMP's when requesting samples for tests being performed.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and training of new policies, procedures and/or programs related to local laboratory.
  • Leads regulatory cross functional projects to ensure compliance to new, revised or emerging global laws and regulations across all business channels.
  • Identifies new regulatory hypotheses and conducts regulatory impact analysis and regulatory research to verify validity and compliance to global regulations. May recommend regulatory actions based on risks, risk benefit analysis, or company's risk exposure profiles.

    • Claims (e.g. Nutrient Content, Product, Health, etc.)
    • Government and Religious Certifications (e.g. Kosher, Halal, Certificate of Free Sale etc.)
    • Labelling and Nutrition (e.g. FDA, USDA, Nutritional Information Sheets (NIS))
    • Regulatory Projects (e.g. amended, new and evolving global laws and regulations)
    • Testing and Validation (e.g. Nutrition, PCR, Claims, etc.
    • Naming Convention
    • Safety Data Sheets
    • Trade Compliance (e.g. Classification, Tariffs, Duties, Taxes, Export Certificates, Free Trade Agreement Certificates and Audits etc.)"


  • Design as well as participate in the coordination, monitoring, testing, and reporting of Nutrition, PCR, Claims Validation testing activities.
  • Represent department as required at internal and external meetings and conferences. May interview and recommend hiring of technical personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This role requires up to 10% travel.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Regulatory Compliance, Regulatory Affairs, Food Science, Food Nutrition, Quality Assurance, Food Safety, Biology, Chemistry, International Food law, or related field, or equivalent industry experience required.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a food regulatory function to include supervision experience and/or relevant training.
  • Experience in a food, beverage, or pharmaceutical industry in regulatory compliance, or in a regulatory affairs capacity.
  • Active participation in food industry Trade Associations would be an asset.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Canada Food and Drug Regulations.
  • Proficient knowledge in global food laws and regulations under FDA and USDA jurisdictions.
  • A working knowledge of Kosher and Halal Certification Programs, Trade Agreements (FTA), Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and related trade activities in APAC, EMEA, LATAM, NA.
  • Knowledgeable in risk assessments, food additives, food ingredients and project management.
  • Demonstrative understanding of Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), The Food Code, Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and associated FSMA Rules, Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), Codex Alimentarius, California Proposition 65, California Proposition 12, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Labelling Statutes and Regulations and other applicable regulations governing food manufacturing globally.
  • Excellent organizational, communications (both verbal and written), interpersonal and team interaction skills.
  • Highly motivated, collaborative, self-directed and self-starter team player.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office, Regulatory Software Systems (e.g. Decernis gComply, Decernis gComply Plus, Descartes, Genesis R&D, etc.).

The range provided is for California-based employees as Ventura Foods is required by California State Law to post pay rates.
