Overview

1.0 FTE, 40 Hours Per Week, Monday-Friday, on Days with varying shifts

Starting pay: $34.00/hr + based on experience

Non-exempt, Part-Time Benefits Eligible Position.

Recovery room experience preferred
Will work in Preop, Recovery room and discharge areas

Assists patients to move rapidly, uneventfully, and as effectively as possible through their surgical encounter, maintaining quality and safety as a priority. Delegates, directs, oversees and provides developmentally appropriate patient care. Practices professional nursing and promotes patient advocacy in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses. Maintains a current Ohio Nursing License.

Responsibilities

As a Pre-Op Nurse:

1.Participates in the preparation of the patient for surgery.

2. Maintains communication with the reception areas and O.R. to assure efficient movement of patients.

3. Provides emotional support for the patient and family.

4. Prepares patient for surgery by verifying patient identity and scheduled procedure.

5. Records vital signs and prepares medications as ordered by physician or anesthesia personnel.

6. Assists in the cleaning of the room after a case.

7. Assists with post-op call to patient and documents patients/families responses on the EMR.

8. Assists with nursing functions in other clinical areas.

9. Performs other duties as directed by the Clinical Leader and/or Program Manager. As PACU/Phase II Nurse:

10. Receives patient from O.R./PACU, assesses patient's condition on admission to PACU and Phase II and discharge from PACU and Phase II, and documents on PACU record.

11. Observes and monitors the post-op patient by taking vital signs, and if needed EKG, and documenting patient's progress while in the PACU.

12. Administers medications, IV's and treatments; maintains records regarding dispensing; observes and evaluates patient's reaction and acts appropriately in the event of adverse reactions.

13. Performs/assists physician in sterile and non-sterile dressing changes and other procedures as requested.

14. Provides a summary of post-op instructions to patient/family prior to discharge from the unit; documents patient/family's understanding of teaching according to standards; assures that patient/parents have surgeon's office number to facilitate post-op appointment.

15. In an emergency situation: is able to give immediate respiratory assistance or support, including use of AMBU bag, airways, and endotracheal tubes; administers CPR; assists with defibrillation, and performs venipuncture, following PALS standards.

16. Maintains Code Blue/crash cart.

17. Recognizes and utilizes safety precautions and procedures; follows universal protocol policy.

18. Remains familiar with equipment and supplies, including function, location, and upkeep; assists in restocking unit as needed.

19. Maintains a comfortable, orderly, clean, safe environment in the recovery areas.

INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Demonstrates flexibility in sharing responsibilities of all members of the interdisciplinary team to enhance the teamwork atmosphere.

2. Cross-trains to other perianesthesia areas.

3. Participates in environmental functions associated with room turnover and equipment and supply needs.

4. Provides scheduling support as needed.



Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Graduate of an approved ACEN or CCNE accredited school of nursing.

2. BSN preferred or completed within five years of hire.

3. Licensed as a registered nurse in the State of Ohio.

4. Current CPR certification. (Must have PALS certification)

5. One year of PACU or Acute Care experience preferred. Clinical Nurse.

6. Must be able to see, hear, stand, walk, speak, read and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation, and care for oneself with little or no difficulty.

7. Must be able to independently lift up to 25 lbs.

8. Must be able to move or reposition patients of any weight or size with the assistance of another person(s) and/or equipment.

PROFESSIONAL/EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

1. Identifies own needs for professional growth.

2. Assumes responsibility for operational and educational issues concerning surgical specialties. Operational issues; supply, equipment ordering, maintenance and trials. Educational issues; orientation, competency development and validation.

3. Participates in unit and hospital activities (e.g.): Infection Control Policy/Procedure Standards Quality Improvement Shared Governance

4. Functions as an emissary of the NCH Surgery Center in terms of marketing, education and service orientation. Marketing may include participation in community health fairs, informational days or specific educational programs.

5. Practices professional nursing in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Must be able to see, hear, stand, walk, speak, read and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation, and care for oneself with little or no difficulty.

2. Must be able to independently lift up to 25 lbs.

3. Must be able to move or reposition patients of any weight or size with the assistance of another person(s) and/or equipment.
