Position Summary
The UNC Integrated Genomics Cores and Bioinformatic and Analytics Research Collaborative ( BARC) is looking for a Junior Research Associate/Analyst.The analyst will provide technical and analytical support for SOM bioinformatic and genomics software, and act as a consultant and analyst to projects in the UNC research community for BARC . Other BARC projects will include DNA-Seq and RNA-Seq analyses, custom downstream analysis, and data visualization.This position will spend 25% of its time providing technical and analytics support for software tools, 35% of effort supporting enterprise genomics tools and databases, 30% of its time consulting and providing bioinformatics support for other BARC projects, and 10% effort supporting the education and outreach mission of the BARC The Research Associate will be expected to support workshops on bioinformatics.Familiarity with genomic data, translational research and databases/ health informatics is strongly preferred; background in biology is helpful but not required. Must be able to work independently and as a part of a diverse team.Skills:- Advanced ability to code in a scripting language (Python or Perl), Pandas- Proficiency with R or similar statistical language- SQL is a plus- Experience working in a HPC environment- Familiarity with current open-source bioinformatics tools for sequencing analysis- Familiarity with electronic health record data a plus.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Advanced ability to code in a scripting language (Python or Perl), Pandas- Proficiency with R or similar statistical language- Experience working in an HPC/cloud environment- Familiarity with current open-source bioinformatics tools for sequencing analysis- Familiarity with single-cell genomics
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- This position requires expertise in a scripting language (Python or Perl), and proficiency in a statistical language like R- A background in biology, biomedical research, cancer or genomics is helpful but not required.- Strong candidates will also have experience analyzing electronic health record data and other types of large metadata datasets, RNA-Seq, or cancer data analysis.
