Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Large Animal Clinic Patient Care Manager(s) or designee, in accordance with orders provided by veterinarians, provide technical support for the Livestock Herd Health and Livestock Medicine and Surgery Unit in the VMTH and in the field. Provide routine, reproductive and critical care to Livestock patients (cattle, sheep, goats, swine). Provide technical assistance to clinicians, residents, students and other technicians. Collect samples and perform diagnostic testing, restrain patients, use livestock chutes and equipment, administer treatments, monitor patients, maintain accurate medical and herd records, assist with reproductive procedures such as: AI, ET, semen processing, perform surgical nursing, provide outpatient receiving support, monitor anesthesia. keep accurate medical record and drug logs; assist with reproductive procedures such as: AI, ET, semen processing; and assist in the education and organization of veterinary students and residents. Secondary responsibilities include assisting with ambulatory vehicles (including driving), inventory management and client scheduling/ billing.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) within 3 months of the date of hire.
  • Must possess a valid California Drivers License.
  • Experience with livestock husbandry & behavior, handling, moving, restraining livestock (cattle, sheep, pigs and goats) including fractious and aggressive livestock.
  • Experience monitoring patient's vital signs, observing & recording patient behavior & bodily functions, and experience with fluid therapy and catheter care.
  • Experience administering vaccines, medication PO,IV,SQ & IM.
  • Skill to perform aseptic techniques to assist with major and minor Livestock Surgical procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills with the skills to effectively communicate with a diverse group of clients, faculty, residents and students, verbally and in writing with excellent penmanship and the skills to transcribe numbers without confusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with computer programs including Excel & specialty programs for record entry, review and billing purposes.
  • Good organizational skills to prioritize daily/weekly workload with skills to recognize and handle difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals.
  • Knowledge of medications commonly used in livestock.
  • Knowledge of reproductive/assisted reproductive technology and surgical procedures including advanced reproductive techniques and related laboratory processing.

Department Overview

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Physical Demands

  • Work with cattle, small ruminants and swine in the VMTH and in the field.
  • Perform physical labor for potentially extended periods of time.
  • Work quickly and confidently on client-owned dairies and ranches, where exposure to bodily fluids and waste from domestic farm animals may occur.
  • Client-owned dairies may require a significant amount of walking throughout the visit.

Work Environment

  • Working hours are not regular and often start before 8am.
  • Fluctuating meal periods; work schedule does allow a set meal time.
  • This position may require travel to where the herd is located and may include extended time in a vehicle per day.
  • This position will be enrolled in the DMV Pull Notice system.
