Job Summary

The Medical Surveillance Program is a highly complex and unique program within the Department of Public Health Sciences, providing comprehensive occupational health services to a variety of companies, state and government agencies throughout California. The program services approximately 30 state and government contracts, through a variety of mechanisms including the use of mobile traveling clinics, the C Street Occupational Health Clinic located in Sacramento and the coordination and oversight of services provided by approximately 50 subcontracted occupational health clinics throughout California. A variety of Occupational Health examinations are provided on-site with the mobile medical units or scheduled at the Sacramento clinic; services include but are not limited to pre-employment, DMV, respiratory, hazardous materials, POST physical exams, and immunizations to meet the OSHA requirements and compliances for contracted agencies. The health and safety services and medical clearances provided are customized to each agency and vary in scope and complexity. Under the direction of the Program Manager, the incumbent provides administrative and programmatic support to the Medical Surveillance Program through records management utilizing an EMR system to provide occupational health services to state, city, county, and other government agencies. The position requires a high level of analytical and critical thinking and exceptional customer service in support of state agency contracts. The incumbent is responsible for performing with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in recording and reporting the client/patient medical results, as such the reporting of the medical status directly impacts the individual employee's ability to use a respirator and/or their medical clearances required for their work, often in hazardous situations. The medical surveillance unit is a busy unit that often requires collaboration and cross training across accounts and agencies to meet the mission and goals of the unit.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree in related field and / or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a high volume fast paced clinical setting.
  • Experience working with electronic medical records.
  • Experience recording laboratory results and other medical data input.
  • Demonstrated experience drafting correspondence, forms, reports, and/or preparing patient lists, schedules, etc.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated skills working with and maintaining sensitive and confidential records and an understanding of disclosure requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills to perform the duties of the job.
  • Excellent time management, discernment, and decision making skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of OSHA and NIOSH regulations specific to occupational health.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, specifically understanding laboratory tests and other medical vital statistics and results. Familiarity with specialty diagnostic tests such as cardiovascular evaluations, vaccines, laboratory tests, etc.
  • Excellent proofreading and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail, recognize discrepancies, and make appropriate and accurate changes.
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment and excellent analysis and problem solving skills, in prioritizing and organizing extremely heavy workloads in an active and complex work environment with multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to independently organize medical screenings, collect and appropriately record medical results with client records, extract data from database to prepare accounts receivable, review and correct discrepancies.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to independently determine priorities and perform diverse tasks efficiently in order to meet deadlines.
  • Initiative and ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing situations in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to withstand stress and retain interpersonal effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated clear written and verbal communication to communicate in a professional manner both in person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to access, comprehend and successfully utilize contents and structure of databases used and enter data accurately.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within California to screening sites, or run errands in support of screenings. (Own vehicle, mileage reimbursed.)
  • Ability to periodically assist at clinical screenings by taking blood pressures, pulse, height/weight, or check patients in/out.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid California Driver's License.
