Summary of Job Duties:Provide subject specific tutoring assistance while promoting effective study strategies. Tutors will work closely with staff and participate as a team member to improve student success and retention. Tutors are hired for various courses and disciplines. The position reports to the Assistant Director of the Academic Success Center Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • An academic level of second-semester freshman is required.
  • Must have a grade of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale) in the courses that will be tutored.
  • Must be available a minimum of 10 hours a week.
  • Must be a current UAFS student.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:

  • Knowledge of the content area being tutored
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Verbal, visual and/or written presentation skills
  • Ability to incorporate technology into tutorial sessions
  • Ability to work with small groups of students
  • Ability to model study skills that will help students to succeed

Summary of Job Duties

  • Promote effective study habits, assist with comprehension of course work, enhance learning concepts and strategies, and work with faculty members and ASC to improve student success and retention.
  • Provide in-person tutoring support based on their credentials and availability in courses.
  • Attend training/orientation sessions and conduct tutoring sessions as assigned in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain attendance data and complete appointment summaries for each tutoring session to ensure positive academic progress is achieved.
  • Adapt presentation of material to meet the learning styles of the students by using verbal, visual, and written methods.
  • Maintain strong working relationship with staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to other students. Requires consistent on-time attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work performed primarily in an office setting.

Work Schedule

Tutors will work maximum of 20 hours during office hours Monday through Friday. Choose your own hours. The Gordon Kelley Academic Success Center (ASC) is open five days a week with hours of operation varying from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Actual work schedule will depend on the demand for the courses, time availability, and the needs of the students.
