Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose
The Pre-Dental Academic Advisor supports the University's strategic plan by providing educational guidance and assistance to biology majors in the Pre-Dental program. Academic advisors assist students with their academic plans and progress, class schedules, major selection, and other academic issues.
The Pre-Dental Program Academic Advisor position reports to the Pre-Dental Program Advisor in the Department of Biological Sciences.
Essential Functions
Independently coordinate and deliver advising to all Pre-Dental Advantage students, as well as other students interested in dental school:

  • Assist students with developing an academic plan, registering for classes, fulfilling university degree requirements, and meeting the requirements for admission to dental school.
  • Educate students about and assist them with academic processes (registration, add/drop, degree adjustments, etc.) by sharing University policies, program requirements, etc.
  • Assist students to independently monitor their progress toward their educational goals.
  • Proactively provide referrals to academic and campus resources as needed, including academic coaching, General Academic Tutoring, Career Services, Student Health, and Care Management.
  • Acquire and maintain in-depth knowledge of best practices in academic advising, University academic policy, and major requirements in order to assist with the above.


Participate in and coordinate advising and admissions activities:

  • Participate in Fall orientation activities pertaining to advising.
  • Working with Admissions staff, meet with prospective students, parents, and families, providing academic counseling.
  • Coordinate advising activities with the Biology department, and the Dugoni School of Dentistry admissions team.
  • Participate in meetings about student progress with the College of the Pacific Student Success Team and/or the Department of Biological Sciences.

Keep and review records in compliance with FERPA and other relevant policies:

  • Regularly review academic records for Pre-Dental students and counsel students to ensure compliance with academic regulations and policies as well as to maintain satisfactory academic progress.
  • Perform annual reviews of academic records for upcoming graduates to ensure Pre-Dental students are on track to graduation; communicate results of this mid-point degree audit process to students, faculty, and the Dean's office.
  • Maintain accurate academic records and forms in appropriate confidential manner in accordance with FERPA and other relevant policies using the CRM and other online tools.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Three (3) years of related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in related field.
  • Experience as an academic adviser at a college or university.
  • Knowledge of NACADA's Core Values of Academic Advising. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
  • Demonstrated tact and diplomacy in working with diverse populations, including parents, students, faculty, campus administrators, and the public.
  • Interviewing techniques and ability to facilitate effective academic advising sessions one-to-one.
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality, discretion, and judgment; handle moderately sensitive interpersonal issues. Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn and accurately apply university policies, procedures and requirements for all undergraduate programs.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.

Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with use of computer and phone. Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work performed mostly during standard business hours as well as some hours during evenings and weekends. Occasional travel may be required.
Hiring Range $26.00 per hour to $27.00 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
