Position Purpose
To provide animal care in the zebrafish aquatics facility in support of biomedical research conducted in several Dartmouth labs. After training, to work both independently and in a group to provide care of fish in a safe and sanitary manner in accordance with established regulations and guidelines. To perform daily fish feeding and facility maintenance tasks, and to troubleshoot problems with aquatic systems when they arise. This will be a part-time position, with days and hours negotiable but will usually be mornings only. Experience with zebrafish care is not necessary, we will provide all necessary training.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
* Must be in good physical condition and capable of lifting and carrying equipment or feed packages weighing up to 50lbs, climbing a step stool, and lifting arms above head.
* Ability to work weekend and holiday schedules if needed.
* Ability to work independently with good judgment.
* Team player and works well in a group
* Responsible and reliable.
* Communicates often and effectively.
* Ability to apply procedures for the care and handling of laboratory animals.
Preferred Qualifications
* One year of relevant animal care or relevant experience.
* Knowledge of computers and software applications.

Animal Care
* Feeds zebrafish lines following established operating procedures.
* Observes and maintains an awareness of the physical needs of the animals and of their condition.
* Monitors the growth and survival of larval and juvenile zebrafish in the nursery.
* Assesses and reports changes in the living condition of animals.
* Communicates with fish facility users regarding the status of their research animals.
* Euthanizes animals as needed.

Description
Facility/Habitat Maintenance
* Cleans aquatic tanks and system components, utilizing a washer or other approved methods.
* Has complete knowledge of all aspects of the recirculating water and filtration systems, monitors water quality daily and adjusts parameters to fish life support units as needed.
* Updates daily log of system parameters (e.g., pH, temperature, conductivity, light:dark cycles) and equipment maintenance logs.
* Performs light maintenance of the facilities such as replacement of particle filters, UV bulbs, emptying waste baskets and cleaning floors.
* Sanitizes sinks, bench tops, microscopes, and other surfaces as needed.
* Prepares chemicals as needed including mixing appropriate dilutions for different solutions.

Administrative
* Has mastery of zebrafish inventory database, updates records and performs routine tank counts to confirm accuracy.
* Keeps zebrafish facility well-equipped by monitoring use of consumable supplies and non-consumable equipment. Orders food, filters, nets and other consumables as needed.
* Receives and properly stores food and supplies.

Miscellaneous
* Participates in in-house training programs and maintains safety and training certifications. Serves as a trainer for new employees.
* May feed fish on a weekend.
