Job Description
JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:

Responsible for observing, learning, and fulfilling the tasks and duties of a laborer. Learn how to remove the build up of concentrate in the pocket belt area, loading hoppers and transverse conveyor alleys. The apprentice laborer will learn how to operate and utilize the hi-vac system or manually broom any concentrate accumulations outside the conveyor alleys to prevent environmental contamination: the turret deck, control cab deck, tops of bin walls, on top of the canopy tarps. The apprentice laborer reports directly to the Loading Supervisor and will be given on the job training to fulfill the functions of the position.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Will meet the barge with the Loading Supervisor upon arrival at the load cells, and assist Teck and Foss employees in making the barge fast with mooring lines.
  • Survey and prioritize clean up work to be done during the loading operation with the Loading Supervisor.
  • In addition to cleaning of concentrate spillage, the apprentice laborer will clean and perform maintenance inside barge work spaces as assigned.
  • Learn how to assist the Loading Supervisor in surveying the barge for trim and list.
  • Accurately read draft level indicators and/or measure freeboard readings as requested.
  • Learn how to operate a radio and maintain constant radio contact with the Loading Supervisor to insure the safety of both people.
  • Assist in casting off lines when loading is complete and the barge is to depart for discharge operations.
  • Perform maintenance and repair tasks during lay periods as assigned.
  • Must be able to work 12 hour shifts on a steel deck.
  • Must be able to work 3-4 weeks in remote locations.
  • Must be able to fly in a fixed-wing or rotor blade aircraft.
  • Basic knowledge or comprehension of operating machinery, pumps, fluid dynamics, vacuum a plus.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Learn how to and survey the barge as fire watch during loading operations.
  • Insure that personal safety equipment issued is used at all times and is properly maintained.
  • Adherence to Standard Operating Procedures as given in the Barge Superintendent's Manual.
  • Adherence to the Foss Drug and Alcohol Policy, as well as all policies and work rules as given in the Foss Employee handbook.
  • Participation in the Lead Compliance Program with respect to monthly blood testing, fitting and proper utilization of respiratory protection.


Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to all weather conditions, including exposure to high noise levels and exposure to heat and cold.
  • Work is generally performed in the field, in all weather conditions.
  • Candidate must be able to work for extended periods of time in poorly ventilated confined spaces wearing safety equipment such as, hard hat, gloves, boots, rain gear, and respirators for protection from harmful dust and fumes.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is a requirement.


Physical/Mental Demands:



  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit/stand; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to move between buildings, ascend/descend stairs and go outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • One needs the ability to climb ladders and over bulwarks.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • Must have reasonable sensory skills. Including color vision, depth perception, hand/eye coordination and hearing.
  • Must be proficient in the English language.
  • Must be flexible and receptive to change.
  • Must have ability to deviate from established routines on short notice and be able to recognize the level of importance of new assignments.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. Must pass a physical-fit exam. Must possess a valid TWIC card.
