POSITION SUMMARY

This person is responsible for assisting the pharmacist in the daily operations of the pharmacy. Duties include filling Automated Dispensing Machines (ADM's), Unit Dosing medications, and accessing the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The pharmacy technician is a valuable part of the pharmaceutical care team.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support for the staff pharmacist(s) on duty.
  • Pull medication for ADM fills for pharmacist to verify. Once checked by a pharmacist deliver fills to the floor and stock into the ADM's.
  • Prepare IV and IVPB Solutions.
  • Prepare unit dose packages when not commercially available.
  • Deliver medications to nursing units.
  • Maintain the system for pharmacy floor stock items including filling departmental requisitions received and delivering them to the appropriate department. Restock the ADM's.
  • Process charges as requested (via charge sheets, e-mail, phone call) in EMR.
  • Complete and document monthly nursing unit drug storage area inspections in a timely manner. Inspections include but are not limited to confirming cleanliness of the area, making sure it is organized, and checking for outdates.
  • Provide support for the staff pharmacist on duty in maintaining the essential day-to-day aspects of the pharmacy by:
  • Enter patient charges.
  • Run reports from Automated Dispensing Machines.
  • Update par levels, drugs stocked, user's passwords, etc. in ADM.
  • Alert pharmacist when needed for dispensing, counseling and/or drug information duties.
  • Assist in initiating appropriate forms for pharmacist's clinical, pharmacy care and/or patient education duties.
  • Prepare and process reports used by pharmacists for clinical and patient care duties as needed.
  • Maintain inventory control. Keep inventory clean and organized. This includes duties related to the purchase, receiving and possible return of all pharmacy items except for DEA Class II controlled substances.
  • Review and receive invoices. Document when products are received on invoices including date, time & initials (manually or electronically). Maintain an easily retrievable filing system where these records are stored.
  • Accurately comply with all documentation as required by the policies and procedures of the department.
  • Responsible for organizing, and preparing for the annual pharmacy physical inventory.
  • Maintain the pharmacy night cabinet, which is designed to make pharmacy products easily accessible when the department is not open.
  • Check all drug storage areas for expiring medications monthly, remove and restock affected items, and periodically return outdated medications which are eligible for credit and destroy those which are not.
  • Assist the Director of Pharmacy in gathering data needed for the departmental Performance Improvement Plan as requested.
  • Maintain high standards of environmental cleanliness in the department with regards to the clean room, barrier isolators, and drug storage areas. Clean and maintain barrier isolators as per pharmacy policy.
  • Maintain high standards of orderliness in the department with regards to restocking returned medications and returning or disposing of outdated medications.
  • Keep up to date with departmental and hospital wide developments by reading and confirming review of all new items disseminate via e-mail, memo, educational offering or verbally.
  • Maintain competency by completing departmental staff skills and development programs as directed, attending all mandatory hospital in-services.
  • This includes maintaining mandatory educational requirements based on JCO, Illinois Board of Pharmacy, IDPH, and OSHA standards.
  • Direct the orientation and training of new pharmacy technicians as requested by the Director.
  • Communicate any relevant concerns with the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Order, receive, and invoice for acquisition of drugs.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health requirements and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned



Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid, active Pharmacy Technician's License in the State of Illinois.
  • Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Board



Experience

  • Pharmacy Technician Experience Required
  • Hospital Pharmacy Technician Experience Preferred
  • Hospital and IV compounding experience preferred.



Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • The ideal candidate must be able to work and complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work accurately and effectively in oral and written directions and communication.
  • Enjoys working with people and works cooperatively with other hospital staff.
  • Medium Lifting, generally lifting not more than 50 lbs. maximum with assistance, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
