Senior Metal Bellows continues to refine and develop welded metal bellows technology and the integration of welded metal bellows into critical aerospace, semiconductor, medical, defense, and industrial applications. Our 115,000 square-foot manufacturing facility is conveniently located on Route 1 in Sharon, Massachusetts.

What is the Position?

Senior Metal Bellows has been developing custom engineered bellows-based products to meet the needs of some of the world's most demanding industries for over 65 years. SMB's Advanced Technology team is responsible for leading the research and development of new product concepts and manufacturing technologies within the organization. The Senior Process Engineer position will be a critical role within this team, leading the development of innovative manufacturing processes while supporting the development of new product concepts to help drive the future of the organization overall.

As a senior member of the engineering team, the candidate will work in a cross functional engineering and manufacturing organization and should be highly skilled at developing and communicating engineering specifications, engineering requirements, concept reviews, and test procedures and instructions. Creative and innovative thought will be critical to the role, as the position will be responsible for developing and validating new technologies to support the manufacture of edge welded metal bellows-based assemblies. Work will include leading manufacturing line improvement projects, design for manufacturability and design for assembly related projects, research into alternative manufacturing methods used across the industry, and incorporating concepts into a broader manufacturing technology roadmap.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Work with cross functional teams to gather and analyze information, including manufacturing yields, customer data, and industry trends to identify opportunities to implement new or improved manufacturing processes, materials, or equipment to improve efficiency and/or quality
  • Proactively identify and execute new process investigations aligned with the demands of the organization
  • Lead design reviews summarizing new process design, qualification results, and production readiness
  • Identify, explore and report out on industry best practices and new or relevant technologies that could be utilized to improve the current manufacturing process.
  • Apply a strong analytical approach to the design process, including mechanics, thermals, and tolerance analyses
  • Oversee and manage pilot builds and qualification testing to ensure adequate data collection
  • Coordinate with the Operations department to obtain manufacturing support as needed
  • Influence cross-functional managers and decision makers through use of thoughtful, well organized presentation of data.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship and coaching to less experienced technical and manufacturing personnel
  • Other duties as required to support the growth of the organization


Qualifications/Skills:



  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field required
  • 5-7 years of experience in a manufacturing related engineering organization
  • Experience in a leadership role, either formal or informal.
  • Proven ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways
  • Sense of ownership and demonstrated ability to interpret test results to draw conclusions
  • Ability to create and interpret Engineering design documentation (schematics, drawings, etc.)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Superior technical writing skills
  • Advanced skills using Microsoft Office suite, CAD software (Solidworks preferred), and statistical analysis software (Minitab preferred)
