Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose
Enterprise Risk Management and Environmental Health and Safety's ( EHS) mission is to provide guidance and services to the campus community that promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship. EH&S is a dynamic, fast-paced organization focused on promoting workplace safety and environmental protection for the campus community while helping to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to occupational safety and the environment. This position reports to the Director of Enterprise Risk Management.
Essential Functions

  • Maintains compliance with State and Federal regulations pertaining to occupational safety, including but not limited to California OSHA, radiation, hazardous materials etc.
  • Leads inspections related to potential safety hazards and recommends corrective actions.
  • Overall support for the Universities laboratory safety program. This includes participation in general inspections, supporting various other initiatives including chemical safety, machine safety, and hazardous waste.
  • Assess situations to determine the root cause of accidents and plans corrective action to mitigate future losses.
  • Develops training programs designed to educate employees in occupational safety including the proper identification and handling of chemicals and radiation.
  • Documents project activities and ensure that all regulatory-mandated information is appropriately documented and secure to assure compliance with various legal requirements.
  • Oversees the handling, storage, and disposal of University hazardous, bio, and universal waste. In the event of spills, ensures that areas contaminated with biological, chemical, radiological, or other hazardous waste are properly cleaned.
  • Coordinates with University staff to ensure that safety matters are resolved, and compliance reports are completed, filed, or posted as required.
  • Tests and maintains environmental health and safety equipment.
  • Cross-trains with other University EHS personnel to provide support, teamwork, and act as a back-up for other EHS roles in the department.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree (Two (2) years of full-time experience in the same/similar position is equal to one (1) year of completed post-high school education coursework).
  • Five (5) years of experience in occupational, environmental (hazardous materials and waste management), health, and safety fields.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in occupational safety and health or related field
  • Professional certifications in occupational safety and health or related field.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills and group facilitation skills.
  • Forty (40) hour radiation safety officer's class completion certificate.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

May require extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional to frequent standing, walking, walking across campus, project sites, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and reaching. Occasional lifting to 50 pounds.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is performed both outdoors and indoors, which requires frequent walking, standing, simple grasping, climbing stairs, stooping, lifting, and reaching. Work performed during standard business hours. Additional hours may be required to meet business needs or deadlines. Occasional to frequent visits to project sites.

Exposure to hazardous materials. Must be eligible to wear a respirator.
Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range $66,560.00 - $83,799.30 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
