Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
In 2022,
UNC-Chapel Hill launched the School of Data Science and Society (
SDSS), a new school devoted to data science teaching, research, scholarship, service, and creativity. The
SDSS vision is to be a leader in shaping the field of data science through an interdisciplinary and rigorous grounding in theory and methods with a human centric approach to the entire data life cycle. The mission of the
SDSS is to empower a diverse community of faculty conducting research in the fundamentals and/or the applications of data science. The school is training undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to be the next generation of data science leaders with the knowledge and skills to thrive in this data-driven world. The
SDSS will serve the state, the nation, and the world through premier data science educational programs and innovative research directed to advancing the public good with human-centric and ethical applications. The core elements of the
SDSS include porous borders - leveraging our low-walled collaborative Carolina culture to solve major societal problems. Interdisciplinary research clusters that cross disciplines and school boundaries are a vital element of the school. The
SDSS is focused on students and education - the emphasis is not just on data science majors but on all students becoming data literate. The school's culture has an open and transparent structure, governance, and business model. |
Position Summary |
The Master of Applied Data Science (
MADS) Student Services Coordinator at the
UNC School of Data Science and Society (
SDSS) will be primarily responsible for ensuring a student-centered and efficient student services process that complies with Campus guidelines for students of this online degree program. This also involves the following - Liaise with the Graduate School, Digital and Lifelong Learning (
DLL), and other units on campus to ensure alignment with policies and procedures. Work with
DLL to ensure University and Program processes and procedures are followed.Work with leadership, staff, and faculty to maintain a scalable, data-driven, and efficient student services process for
MADS, according to the program and the School's priorities. Engage with internal and external key stakeholders, such as online program management (
OPM) partners for efficient student services processes.Work with internal stakeholders and
OPM partners on strategies to mitigate attrition, foster student well-being, and increase the likelihood of graduation success, among others.Assist the
MADS program director in implementing scalable and efficient mechanisms to engage with admitted students throughout their journey from admittance to graduation to job placement.Capture and consolidate students' expectations and needs, align them with the School's and program's capabilities, and mobilize program resources to meet expectations where feasible/relevant.Work with the
MADS program director and internal and external stakeholders to create/improve an inclusive online community where students are satisfied, engaged, and graduate on time.Liaise with roles within the School and on campus that manage industry/government/community relations to consolidate capstone, networking, and job placement opportunities, among others.Produce frequent, timely, and data-driven progress reports for key stakeholders.Provide data-driven recommendations to
SDSS leadership on human, technological, and other resources required to scale up and improve processes.Work with SDSS' Office of Cross-Sector Partnerships to identify possible opportunities for career placement.Manage various special projects as identified by the program. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Ability to problem-solve and manage time effectively.Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.Superior oral and written communication skills |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Minimum of 1-2 years of related experience in admissions and/or student affairs in higher education. Master's degree is preferred. Experience in student affairs and student support is desirable. Strong proficiency in computer skills, especially Customer Relationship Management (
CRM) is desirable. Highly developed relational skills and student-oriented (customer-oriented) processes.Strong written and oral communication, organizational and management skills. Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, leadership, and students. Strong project management skills preferred. Proficiency in MS Office Suite is preferred. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
