Description

This individual will provide efficient and effective nursing phone support to the practicing physicians, advanced practice nurses, and residents in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The individual will provide quality nursing care and treatment to the obstetrical and gynecological patients examined by the physicians in the attending clinics and by the residents in the resident's clinic.


Examples of Duties

I. Clinical Support - Triage Nursing 95%
A. Proficient in the ability to utilize SIU phone and computer systems
B. Complies with strict observance of patient confidentiality (HIPPA)
C. Screens telephone calls from patients and evaluates the need for the patient to be seen in clinic and/or obtains medical advice from physicians or other members of the health care team.
D. Documents information conveyed by the caller pertinent to the encounter for the medical record. Records date, time, and caller information specific to each encounter, including the caller's name and contact information for follow up.
E. Provides health care information to patients for treatment of acute issues according to established protocols.
F. Exercising sound nursing judgment in counseling Ob/Gyn patients, pharmacies, medical facilities, etc., and explaining and/or supplementing clinical information, treatment plan, surgical procedures, etc., as presented to the patients by the attending physicians. Instructing patients on home procedure such as self-injections, self-catheterization, care of surgical wound, home care of LEEP procedures, and ordering appropriate supplies for patients' home care.
G. Provides diagnostic study results to patients
H. Facilitates orders and medication refills by utilizing the written protocols developed for documentation in the electronic medical record.
I. Returns calls with follow up orders and instructions and other medical advice as directed by the provider(s).
J. Determining medical emergencies and makes ER or Urgent Care referrals for all patients
required according to standing triage protocol(s). Coordinates the patient's care by communicating information regarding referrals to the ER and all healthcare professionals involved
ll. Miscellaneous 5%
A. Serve as a clinical resource to secretarial and clerical personnel as needed
B. Participate in the training of new and existing personnel
C. Attends meetings and training sessions within the department as assigned
D. Assist the Nurse Administrator and Healthcare Administrator in the development of clinical policies and procedures, Ob/Gyn educational materials for distribution to patients and in the collection of patient data for clinical and research applications.
E. Other duties as required, assigned by the administrative team


Qualifications

Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in IL.

Condition of Employment: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
