Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy (DOE) science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Enrichment Systems Engineering Section is seeking a Process Design Engineer who will support the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) within the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). ESED serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of ORNL to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments. ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of centrifuge technology innovations; advances electromagnetic isotope separations technology; and delivers stable isotopes for medical, industrial, and DOE mission-critical applications. The successful candidate will execute these important missions by teaming with ESED's line management, project managers, and staff to build on a rich history of accomplishments in enrichment science and engineering.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

As part of our team, you will provide technical leadership and creative design solutions that strategically advance centrifuge machine design and support enrichment system development. The Process Design Engineer reports to and works closely with the Testbed Design Engineering Group Leader to deliver task assignments and design outputs while following established design processes. This position also works closely with Sr. Process Design Engineer(s) and other ESED subject matter experts, project managers, and WBS managers to execute discrete project scope according to approved schedules, budgets, and technical milestones. Additional interfaces will be with principal investigators, engineers, technicians, and other individual stakeholder personnel.

The Process Design Engineer participates in the process design of complex testbeds for evaluation and researching enrichment devices as well as production system for stable isotopes enrichment. The testbeds are used in the development and execution of complex test plans involving significant data collection and interpretation, assessment of results, and incorporation of steps for continuous improvement of processes and communication of activities to senior research staff and management. The candidate will be responsible for assisting in developing process designs for new testbeds and modifications to existing testbeds based on requirements from various stakeholders. Duties will include creating and maintaining process design documentation including Design Basis / Systems Requirements Documents, PFDs and P&IDs, Heat and Material Balances, Line sizing and hydraulic calculations, Equipment and instrument sizing/selection including safety device (e.g. relief valve, rupture disk) sizing, Control System Narratives

Required Qualifications:

  • BS degree with 2 - 4 years of experience, or MS degree with 1 -3 years of experience in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related field of study.
  • Ability to get and maintain a DOE Q clearance
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel when required
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q Clearance
  • Licensed NCEES Professional Engineer
  • MS Visio and Autodesk AutoCAD experience
  • Experience with hydraulic modeling program such are AFT Arrow & AFT Fathom
  • Experience in a testing & development environment

Special Requirements:

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
