Job Summary:

The Sanford Lab in the Department of Soil and Environmental Sciences is hiring a research technician to support the Dairy, Soil, and Water Regeneration project. This is a public-private research endeavor involving six universities, the Soil Health Institute, the Innovation Center for US Dairy, and private industry seeking to improve the environmental footprint of dairy production by filling critical knowledge gaps associated with current and novel agricultural technologies.

This position involves a combination of field, lab, and office work. As part of this multi-year study, you will help maintain experiments and be responsible for the collection of data relating to greenhouse gas fluxes, agronomic performance, soil carbon stocks, and soil health parameters from large, experimental field plot studies and farm-scale field studies. Responsibilities:
Conducts research experiments with limited supervision. Provides technical support with some degree of independence for research projects and/or labs under moderate supervision.

  • 40% Prepares lab and/or field test materials and samples according to established research requirements and specifications. Performs lab or field tests.
  • 20% Inspects and maintains equipment, supplies, inventory, and facility spaces
  • 20% Collects data and monitors test results according to established research requirements and specifications
  • 15% May assist with literature reviews and/or report writing
  • 5% Reviews data to summarize results for presentations or reporting

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
Specialization in Agronomy, Environmental Science, Biological Systems Engineering, or related field preferred.


Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong attention to detail.
- Experience prioritizing work in a dynamic environment, meeting deadlines, and good record-keeping and data management skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with colleagues and other interested parties.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience using and troubleshooting scientific instruments and software such as greenhouse gas analyzers or environmental dataloggers.
- Research experience with cropping systems ecology and management including field sampling, sample processing and analysis, sample archiving, data entry and retrieval, and database management.
- An understanding of basic tools (measuring tools, saws, grinders, etc.), equipment use, and maintenance.


Work Schedule:

Normal hours are 8am- 4pm, Monday through Friday. Occasional early mornings, late afternoons, and weekends may be required for this position.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Additional Information:

This position requires carrying 60 pounds of equipment short distances across rough terrain all year round (including inclement weather). Must meet criteria to drive university owned vehicles, including the ability to obtain a valid driver's license.
