Research Technician I, Cancer Center (Stott Lab)

Massachusetts General Hospital
United States, Massachusetts, Charlestown
Sep 16, 2024
Description

A position is open for a full time Research Technician I at the MGH Cancer Center in the laboratory of Dr. Shannon Stott. The Stott Lab is looking for a motivated, independent, and organized individual to support our work in microfluidics and imaging. Specifically, we study biomarkers such as extracellular vesicles (EVs) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and well as fluorescent imaging of tumor tissues. The candidate will take responsibility in basic science and translational research projects under close supervision of post-doctoral fellows in the lab, as well as Dr. Stott. The experience gained in the lab will be useful for pursuing a career as a researcher or clinical field. The experiences and training received in our lab are often ideal for developing competitive applications to graduate or medical schools. We have also had strong success for individuals transitioning to the biotech field.

The Stott laboratory is comprised of bioengineers and biologists focused on translating technological advances to relevant applications in clinical medicine. Specifically, we are interested in using microfluidics, imaging, and biopreservation technologies to create tools that increase our understanding of cancer biology and of the metastatic process. The Stott laboratory has co-developed innovative microfluidic devices that can isolate extraordinarily rare circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs) from the blood of cancer patients. We also look at tumor specimens using multispectral imaging, hoping that the exploration of the spatial relationships between immune cells and tumor tissue will help us better predict treatment response. This includes collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab. This is a full time position with benefits. A two year commitment is desired, as the training required is extensive.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research Technician 1 is a full-time position that serves to assist Principal Investigators in a research laboratory. Principal duties are to assist in experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and Dr. Stott. Work will include the handling of clinical samples

(blood, plasma, CSF and tissue) from cancer patients, and potentially patients with other diseases. The candidate will not be working in a clinical setting. All duties are outlined below:

1. Performing laboratory experiments utilizing standard techniques and equipment under the direction of an advisor, including

* Operating and fabricating microfluidic devices

* Converting assays to new devices for 'point of care' translation.

* Designing interfaces for machine operation, with some coding required

* DNA/RNA extraction

* cell culture

2. Handling clinical samples for direct analyses of human tumor circulating tumor cells and extracellular vesicles. Must be comfortable with handling previously collected blood, plasma, CSF and saliva in a safe and controlled environment.

3. Preparing and handling of microfluidic devices in a cleanroom environment (experience preferred but not required);

4. Processing, organizing and summarizing data, reporting experiment results using a variety of scientific, word processing, spreadsheet or statistical software applications or program platforms;

5. Performing routine logging and testing of samples;

6. Assisting in the design of laboratory experiments, techniques, and protocols;

7. Maintaining a thorough lab notebook of all experiments;

8. Instructing other staff and students in basic laboratory techniques;

9. May perform independent literature searches to help drive projects forward;

10. Performing related laboratory maintenance such as maintaining and cleaning equipment and ordering supplies;

11. Prepares lab reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment;
